Job Description

BASIC FUNCTION:Under the direction of an Administrator or designee, assist in the operation of a child care center for children; assist with providing a high quality child development program.

Essential Duties Summary

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
  • Assist in the implementation of a program of activities that contributes to the care, growth and development of children and enhances their growth, development and safety.
  • Participate in implementing the curriculum plan based on assessment results intended to be used by the teacher to guide continuous program improvement.
  • Participate in the observation, documentation, and reflection on the learning, development, and progress of children, 18 months through 5 years of age, who are enrolled in an early care and education program.
  • Assist Early Childhood Education college students in implementing activities for children in a laboratory environment as part of their instructional program; provide input to Early Childhood Education college student progress as directed.
  • Assist small groups of children by following established schedule/routine of developmentally appropriate activities.
  • Assist in the planning and development of the program through providing input and/or recommendations in the preparation of lesson plans; compile resources and materials to ensure intentional learning is developed.
  • Attend and contribute to staff meetings as required; prepare records and reports as directed.
  • Record attendance of children; provide input and/or recommendations for discussions with parents as requested.
  • Assist in maintaining and controlling inventory of instructional supplies.
  • Perform duties as required to maintain a physical environment that conforms to applicable standards of health and safety.
  • Oversee the operation of the cCenter independently in case of absences or emergencies.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Child development and psychology.
  • Department of Social Services licensing requirements.
  • Research based methods used in child care.
  • Health and safety regulations, specifically supervision.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Infant, child, and Adult CPR techniques and AED.
  • Basic pediatric first aid.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles.


ABILITY TO:
  • Assist in the operation of a day care center for children.
  • Assist with providing a high quality child development program.
  • Provide effective supervision for children according to Title 22 regulations.
  • Lead activities for children.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others, including those from a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff


Required Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Any combination equivalent to: sufficient course work to qualify for a Child Development Associate Permit including at least twelve core units in Early Childhood Education or equivalent courses and one year of experience in a child development program. (Permit must be applied for within 30 days of the hire date)

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Child Development Associate Permit or equivalent
  • Appropriate First Aid and AED certificates
  • California Child Care Provider Health and Safety Certificate (to be obtained within 30 working days from date of hire)
  • Driver's license and/or ability to provide own transportation to and from assigned sites

Range/Step
Range 19 (CSEA Salary Schedule)

Salary Range
$18.50- $26.08/Hr. (Steps 1-11)

Benefits Information

PART-TIME (less than .60 PTE): Part-time positions less than .60 PTE are not entitled to any District paid fringe benefits. The District does however; provide the employee prorated leaves including vacation, sick leave and paid holidays. Employees less than .50 PTE contribute to an Alternative Retirement System (Apple). Employees whose, PTE is between .50 and .60 contribute to the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS).

Important Instructions:
  • The Child Development Assistant position is classified as Part Time (.50 PTE - 12 Months), entails an average commitment of 20 hours per week.
  • The work schedule is structured into daily four-hour shifts, spanning Monday through Friday, within the timeframe of 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • This position requires sufficient course work to qualify for a Child Development Associate Permit including at least (12) twelve core units in Early Childhood Education or equivalent courses and (1) one year of experience in a child development program.
