Job Description
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The Counselor will serve under the direction of the Vice President of Student Services or designee at Woodland Community College. The assignment includes day and evening counseling hours and traveling within the service area as needed. Responsibilities may include workshops and/or other Student Services assignments.
Essential Duties Summary
The responsibilities are as follows:
Provide academic, transfer, career, and personal counseling to a diverse general student population.
Assist students in developing educational and career goals, culminating in a student educational plan.
Develop transfer plans that meet eligibility requirements for 4-year colleges and universities.
Provide intervention strategies to increase the retention and persistence of students in general.
Assist in the development and provision of follow-up services for continuing students, including workshops, one-on-one academic advising sessions, and classroom presentations.
Assist in the development and provision of services for students on academic probation or dismissed students, including, but not limited to workshops and one-on-one academic advising.
Administer and interpret inventories and tests of aptitude, career or college major interests, values and personality to assist students in determining career and educational goals and developing education plans.
Advise students with making course selections and help them to develop abbreviated and comprehensive education plans using the college's online education planning system.
Assist in the development and provision of a variety of workshops and classroom presentations for students, including but not limited to orientation, transfer, probation, wellness, and student success topics.
Keep abreast of current information on district and college academic requirements and support services (e.g., financial aid, transfer, degree and graduation requirements, etc.), student success strategies.
Refer students to appropriate on-campus academic and student support services (e.g., EOPS, DSP&S, CalWORKs, Financial Aid, Student Success Center) and off-campus community resources.
Assist in the compilation and documentation needed to report data regarding counseling services provided to students.
Keep abreast of the latest information and requirements of CSU and UC systems, and private and out-of-state institutions, to provide accurate and timely transfer information to students.
Teach counseling classes each semester as assigned, either in-load or extra pay.
Confer with and advise faculty regarding matters of administrative procedure in such areas as admissions and records, articulation and course equivalency, and communication with other colleges and universities.
Assist with the development of delivery systems using technology for alternative student services.
Assist with outreach activities related to enrollment, student engagement, and in-reach/outreach campaigns and events.
Participate in planning and collaborations with high school partners.
Participate in the shared governance process which includes department, division, and college-wide committees and meetings.
Work in close conjunction with the coaching staff and athletic director in a cooperative team effort to ensure appropriate academic advisement and progress monitoring of student-athletes.
Assist in the planning and development of the student-athletes' academic schedule to ensure compliance with California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) requirements.
Assure adherence to CCCAA, NCAA, NAIA, and District rules and regulations.
Monitor the academic progress of student-athletes from matriculation to graduation.
Attend eligibility meetings with the Athletic Director and present eligibility guidelines to athletes.
Ensure all assigned tasks are in compliance with district, Big Valley Conference, and CCCAA rules.
Register and schedule student athletes for classes according to pre-season and in-season competition.
Resolve transfer issues: 2-4 (2-year college to a 4-year college) transfer, 4-2-4 (4-year college to a 2-year college to a 4-year college) transfer, 4-4 (4-year college to a 4-year college) transfer, in addition to determining eligibility.
Understand and communicate the 40-60-80% transfer rule, full-time, part-time status, red shirt, grey shirt, and medical red shirt status.
Serve as a resource for district and campus faculty, administration, counseling faculty, and students on athletic requirements.
Attend and participate in regional and statewide conferences and workshops on athletics.
Assist with training of program staff and student employees on issues related to counseling.
Assist in developing programs and services that will improve student access to college and increase student retention and completion rates.
Serve as a consultant to faculty, staff, and administrators regarding student transfer to four-year colleges and universities, including transfer planning and preparation, requirements, processes, and timelines.
Work collaboratively and in coordination with instructional faculty, staff, and administrators in the development of student success initiatives and provision of counseling services in support of Guided Pathways and other programs, including but not limited to MESA, First Year Experience and Summer Bridge.
Confer with and advise faculty regarding matters of administrative procedure in such areas as admissions and records, articulation and course equivalency, and communication with other colleges and universities.
Assist with the development of delivery systems using technology for alternative and expanded student services, including but not limited to online advising.
Develop counseling curriculum and participate in the development and assessment of Student Learning Outcomes/Service Area Outcomes.
Assist with Program Reviews, annual updates, and Evaluations.
Serve on College committees, attend faculty meetings, and work collaboratively with staff and faculty at the college's three locations: WCC, LCC, and CCC.
Ability to work varied day, evening and weekend hours as needed to meet student and institutional needs for the provision of counseling services.
Complete all duties as assigned by the Vice President Student Services and Matriculation Director.
Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED DUTIES: Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Required Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Selected person must maintain a flexible work schedule, which allows for evening, weekend and off-campus assignments and be enthusiastically capable of adapting to the college's focus on increasing student success and corresponding changes in service delivery.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate, by the final filing date, must possess the minimum qualifications for instructors in Counseling at California Community Colleges:
Master's Degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling
OR the equivalent.
(Note: A bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)
Possess a California Community College life credential in the subject matter area of Counseling.
EQUIVALENCY REQUIREMENT: All applicants are required to meet the minimum qualifications specified by the Yuba Community College District (YCCD) by the application filing date. Alternatively, applicants must have obtained an equivalency determination from the District before the publication of the Recruitment Announcement. Desired/Preferred Qualifications
Bilingual - Spanish preferred
Two years of experience working with disadvantaged students, minority students, and students with disabilities.
One year of administering assessment instruments and diagnostic skills preferred.
Knowledge of California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) requirements.
Demonstrated organizational skills.
Effectively communicate orally and in writing.
Work collegially and collaboratively with diverse constituencies, both internal and external.
Knowledge of working with HSI (Hispanic-serving Institutions) colleges.
Be a strong and articulate proponent of higher education.
Experience working in a participatory governance environment.
Physical Demands
Range/Step Class 2, Step 1 - Class 6, Step 10 (New Hires will not be placed higher than step 10. A 15% increase is added to the annual salary for 202-Day Counselors).
Salary Range $70,834 - $109,252/YR. (Per Salary Schedule for Full Time Faculty)
