Nemours is seeking a part time Breastfeeding Peer Counselor for our Nemours Pediatrics, Milford location. This is a 20 hour per week position. A WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is a support person who gives basic breastfeeding education, support and encouragement to WIC eligible pregnant and/or breastfeeding mothers within designated Nemours primary care offices. The breastfeeding peer counselor demonstrates behaviors that model the standards of behavior, core values and mission statement for the organization.
Qualifications:
Has breastfed at least one baby (does not have to be currently breastfeeding)
Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and willing to share their experiences and knowledge with pregnant women and new mothers.
Can work at least 20 hours per week. Most working hour will be during clinic hours Monday-Thursday from 8-2. (With some weekend availability as needed to answer calls from families or to attend community events)
Has a phone and willing to use to communicate with participants as needed.
Bilingual preferred (English/Spanish or Haitian Creole/English)
High School Diploma
BLS from American Heart Association within 90 days from your start date
Primary Responsibilities:
Attends breastfeeding training classes to become a peer counselor offered by WIC Coordinator.
The WIC PC will be available by phone outside usual 8-5 working hours, utilize a cellular phone to counsel, educate by telephone and n-person at the Nemours Practice sites.
Provide services to at least 15 pregnant or breastfeeding mothers per week at their primary care practices.
Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including telling them about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers and getting a good start with breastfeeding. She also helps mothers prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns.
Respects each participant by keeping information strictly confidential.
Keeps accurate records of all contacts made with WIC participants.
Participate in related outreach activities assigned by the Lactation and WIC program such as health fairs and open house celebrations.
Refers mothers, according to clinic-established protocols.
Attends and assist with prenatal classes and breastfeeding support group.
Attends monthly staff meetings and breastfeeding conferences/workshops as appropriate.
Reads assigned books and materials on breastfeeding that are provided by the supervisor.
May assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects and duties as assigned.
