The Director of Business Operations is responsible for the strategic leadership, planning, organizing, facilitation and monitoring of the business operations across the assigned area(s) of the organization including inpatient, outpatient and professional service departments. Financial accountability for control and revenue maximization.Minimum Required: Master's Degree - Business Administration, Finance, or Health Administration Minimum Required: 3 - 5 Years equivalent experience Preferred: 6 - 10 Years equivalent experienceJob Function: Leadership - 30%


  • Demonstrates knowledge of the organization's Service Standards and incorporates them into the performance of duties Responsible for leadership (hire, evaluate) and oversight of non-clinical operations as assigned; to include associates in areas such as scheduling, clerical, and billing.
  • Lead and implement work flow efficiencies to achieve standardization, develop programs to optimize and improve patient and associate satisfaction, internal and external communication.
  • Participate as an integral member of the assigned area's leadership team providing analytical, financial, human resources perspective and program development.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with other clinical/interventional/non-clinical areas to improve standardization across UCMC and the enterprise as indicated
  • Assumes a leadership role, in partnership with physician and UCMC leaders in managing the operational effectiveness of the department provided across the care delivery continuum and within the larger organization.
  • Provides operational support for the unit, serving as a role model and resource for unit or service-level leadership staff.

Job Function: Financial - 20%

  • Plan, develop and monitor operating and capital budgets for all relevant areas as assigned.
  • Monitor expenditures; work closely with Finance, senior management and clinical leadership to track and report on variances, trends and projections.
  • Oversee the volume budget. Prepare regular and ad hoc reports for senior management and physician leaders.
  • Analyze trends, identify patterns and project annual volume.
  • Formulate and propose budget savings initiatives.
  • Organize and coordinate with clinical and Supply Chain staff to implement initiatives.
  • Identify and implement revenue enhancement opportunities.
  • Work with Finance, clinical and administrative staff to track and monitor initiatives.
  • Report findings to senior leadership. Lead and implement charge capture activities to ensure that charge capture is optimal and timely.
  • Prepare profit and loss analysis for the areas with responsibility.
  • Work closely with Supply Chain to monitor shifts in trends, usage and price adjustments and the resultant impact on budget.
  • Responsible for monitoring, analyzing and reporting on FTE and staffing usage.

Job Function: Performance/Data Analytics - 20%

  • Establish collaborative partnerships among stakeholders to leverage the benefits of standardized tools, people, and centralized activities for a seamless interface to physicians and patients.
  • Partner with IT and system implementation teams to improve system capabilities, workflow, and develop strategies for improved utilization in such platforms such as Epic, ECIN etc.
  • Identify data needs and provide analysis for quality, operational and financial initiatives.
  • Collaborate with department Chairmen, Medical Directors and/or Service Chiefs on analytical needs.
  • Attend, participate in and provide analytical support for the department meetings.
  • Collaborate with outside departments and establish performance dashboards related to the department of responsibility and other related initiatives.
  • Demonstrate and direct employees in using a systematic approach in analyzing and utilizing data in problem-solving and predictive analysis.
  • Ensure that the department goals and objectives coincide with the hospital strategic plan linking to outcomes.
  • Assists leaders in promoting new program development and identifying strategies to engage team members (including Physicians) to enhance initiatives.
  • Develops business plans and/or requests for proposals as requested/required.
  • Reviews and analyzes statistical data to enhance productivity, efficiency and customer satisfaction. Uses results to expand services and improve operations.

  • Promotes and monitors regulatory agency standards and customer service expectations for the practice and compliance with Joint Commission and State and Federal Regulations as they relate to the business functions of the area of responsibility.
