ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: This position requires the demonstrated ability to apply comprehensive knowledge of and skill in using any of the accepted trade methods and techniques, and any of the conventional types and/or CNC machine tools. Must have the skill to operate CNC machines in automatic and semiautomatic mode and to make logical decisions at each program stop or decision point to manually input, change, adjust or otherwise complete the machine instructions to produce a quality finished product and prevent machine collision and damage to machine tooling or part. Master Machinists have a thorough knowledge of advanced shop mathematics. They have skill in using geometric and trigonometric formulas to compute compound angles, angular indexing, hole patterns, pitch lead, and pitch diameters for various standard and nonstandard screw threads. This position makes independent judgments and decisions and has leeway in methods and processes for accomplishing assignments. Incumbents are responsible for recommending and using methods and procedures that contribute toward more efficient and economic machining operations, greater dimensional accuracy, or savings in machine time. May assist lower-level machinists.

GENERAL DUTIES:

  • This position is in support of the Fabrication and Installation (F&I) department.
  • The Master Machinist (CNC) works with minimal supervision and typically reports to a Technical Support Supervisor or Branch Manager.
  • This position is responsible for producing complex, non-routine parts and items of equipment from raw stock of different metals, metal alloys, and other materials.
  • Work products are often one-of-a-kind, involving unusual problem-solving skills and requiring a high degree of ingenuity and responsibility.
  • Assignments typically involve machining of surfaces at unusual or compound angles, items that require different or compound indexing, multiple lead and various other non-standard screw threads, helical or other types of gears, worm threads, or surfaces closely interrelated dimensions or complex configurations that usually require special adaptation or extension of the use of conventional machine tools; and/or performing machining operations on computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools including shop floor programming and using such procedures as multiple setups, in place machining of fixtures, debugging first run programs and making or suggesting changes to machine tool program.
  • Work assignments require a high level of skill and ingenuity in their completion.
  • They often require accomplishing untried tasks, procedures and prototypes; making independent interpretation and translation of work orders, drawings and specifications that may be lacking in such items as dimensions, tolerances and types of fit and finish.
  • The Master Machinist is expected to have the necessary skills to assess the scope and complexity of work and be able to provide cost and work time completion estimates.
  • This position will require set up and operation of machinery such as lathes, drill presses, sheet metal brakes, grinders, milling machines, water jet, and welding equipment.
  • It requires a general knowledge of computer programming including Herco conversational, Master Cam for CNC operations, and Omax 2D programming.
  • Requires knowledge and operation/use of precision tools such as digital calipers, micrometers, and general shop hand tools.
  • Must be able to machine to close tolerances (usually from .001 to .005 inches).
  • Will be required to use various welding applications including TIG, MIG, and OX-Acetylene.
  • Knowledge of the working properties of common metals; selecting materials, parts and equipment required for specific job requirements; to include sheet metal fabrication.


Job Requirements:

OTHER DUTIES: Other duties include general housekeeping of work area and cleanup of machinery. May be required to work with hazardous material and/or collect hazardous waste.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Individual must have either: formal training in machine shop practices and CNC machine operations acquired through vocational or military service school training or a machinist apprenticeship program and 10 years’ experience in the machinist trade, of which 5 years on the E-OMS contract or 15 years’ experience in the machinist trade of which 5 years on the E-OMS contract. Must be able to MIG and TIG tack weld, silver solder and work with sheet metal.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: his position requires a Secret security clearance. Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance. Supports E-OMS operational objectives. Observes company Quality, Safety, Environmental, Security and Administrative policies; supports Process Improvement.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is normally accomplished within an environmentally controlled, heated and cooled shop area subject to machinery noise, but occasionally may require outdoor work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Physical effort required consists of crawling, bending, stooping, and standing, may be required to move or lift heavy items during the performance of duties. Close hand and eye coordination is required in performing many varied tasks.
