The UNC Adams School of Dentistry Division of Craniofacial and Surgical Care provides a diverse approach to treatment for patients with craniofacial or oral and maxillofacial conditions, including those with multiple or complex oral health problems. The Henson Geriatric and Special Care Clinic provides specialized treatment for patients with closed head injury, epilepsy, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, and more. The Henson Geriatric and Special Care Clinic delivers general dental services in the care of these patients and provides education for oral health personnel in the management and treatment of elderly and/or medically, physically or developmentally compromised patients.

The UNC Adams School of Dentistry Division of Craniofacial and Surgical Care provides a diverse approach to treatment for patients with craniofacial or oral and maxillofacial conditions, including those with multiple or complex medical problems. The Special Care & Geriatric clinic provides specialized treatment for medically, physically or developmentally delayed individuals and the frail or elderly.
The mission of the UNC Henson Special Care & Geriatric clinic is to broaden understanding and enhance the health professional's ability to analyze and act upon environmental factors that influence health and the provision of dental and medical services. The ever-changing and broad scope of these factors defines the research, teaching and service endeavors and mandates the multi-disciplinary nature of the departmental faculty and staff. Our clinical, education, research and service activities take place both at the University and UNC Hospitals and are embedded within the surrounding and global community in various locations such as the VA, Health Departments, and AHEC locations.
The Dental Hygienist is a primary care oral health professional, licensed in dental hygiene to provide education, assessment, research, administrative, diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic services that support overall health through the promotion of optimal oral health. The Dental Hygienist will support the Department of Special Care & Geriatrics and UNC Health. Dental hygienists work in partnership with all members of the care team. Dentists and dental hygienists practice together as colleagues, each offering professional expertise for the goal of providing optimum oral health care to the public. The distinct roles of the dental hygienist and dentist complement and augment the effectiveness of each professional and contribute to a collaborative environment.
Licensed to practice as a Dental Hygienist in the State of North Carolina.
Candidate must have a comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices and regulations governing general dental hygiene, patient care protocols, medical guidelines, clinical procedures in general dental hygiene and patient care management. Candidate must have ability to apply continual learning of new clinical treatments, techniques, and technologies in the field of dental hygiene and ability to perform general and specialized patient services consistent with the Dental Hygiene Practice Act. Ability to make appropriate referrals and completes charting. Ability to educate the patient in proper oral hygiene and alternative treatment methods. Ability to discuss alternative treatments with other dental professional. Ability to apply knowledge of educational theory and techniques in the field of dental health. Ability to communicate both verbally and written in executing responsibilities and dealing with patients, faculty, and staff.
Previous experience in dental hygiene and experience in treating patients, who are frail, affected by developmental/cognitive deficiencies or delay, medically complex individuals from pediatrics to geriatrics. Must be competent in proper patient restraint techniques and ability to provide care to patients in wheelchairs or stretchers.

**ELIGIBILITY FOR SIGN-ON BONUS
The selected candidate for this position may be eligible for a sign-on bonus. Qualified applicants must apply and be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:
To be eligible for a Sign-on bonus, an individual must not have worked in a probationary, permanent, or time-limited appointment in the last 12 months as an employee in North Carolina state government, including without limitation the judicial system, state executive branch agencies, and the university system in a position subject to the State Human Resources Act.
A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time (more than 20 hours a week) employee are eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working more than 20 hours and less than 40 hours per week).
