Job Role Summary
The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician assists hospital pharmacists in the preparation and dispensing of medications for hospitalized patients. The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician fills and delivers patient medications, maintains inventory, and stocks pharmacy areas. The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician also prepares various medications, including sterile IV admixtures, up to the point of final check by a pharmacist prior to dispensing.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Performs all duties with a focus on safety, recognizing that safety is our top priority; evaluates compliance with established medication safety procedures; offers suggestions to improve medication safety based on best practice (e.g. ISMP); routinely documents medication errors; promotes an environment with a constant focus on medication safety
Performs the following technical skills: understands and consistently utilizes all information systems, including, but not limited to, Epic, OCRA, and WorkflowRx; understands departmental workflows; offers and implements suggestions to improve quality and efficiency; appropriately answers and triages phones calls; refers all clinical questions to a pharmacist; consistently problem-solves automated dispensing cabinet issues; consistently completes all tasks in assigned area
Performs the following regulatory compliance responsibilities: performs controlled substance accountability duties in assigned work area including, but not limited to, investigating and resolving discrepancies; ensures 100% completion of ward inspections and cleaning logs on a timely basis; consistently empties ADC return bins and checks for ADC outdates daily in assigned areas; ensures constant state of readiness for The Joint Commission, DEA, Board of Pharmacy, Board of Health, and all other regulatory bodies, and suggests and implements process improvement throughout the department to assist in maintaining a constant state of readiness; consistently maintains compliance with all hospital and departmental policies and procedures
Maintains efficient work flow by analyzing and adapting to changes in volume and staffing, and utilizes downtime efficiently; provides cost-effective pharmaceutical care by appropriately using resources such as time, personnel, and supplies; optimizes time efficiently and effectively
Maintains a clean, neat, and professional work area at all times
Works with a sense of urgency to assist customers and encourages the same sense of urgency in others; resolves crisis situations in a calm, constructive, and professional manner
Works collaboratively with multidisciplinary team members to provide patient-centered care; anticipates service needs and proactively resolves issues
Encourages a teamwork environment and encourages positive staff morale by developing and maintaining working relationships with pharmacy management, clinical specialists, pharmacists, support staff, pharmacy residents, and pharmacy students
Remains up-to-date on departmental processes by attending staff meetings, reviewing meeting minutes, and reading email communications
Job Requirements
Completion of a high school education or equivalent; must pass pre-employment math test
Registration with the Health Professions Bureau as a Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Technician-in-Training
Successful completion of Eskenazi Health Pharmacy Technician Training Program within 122-day probationary period
CPhT certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board preferred
Participation in continuing education activities to meet licensure and certification requirements
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of medication classes, pharmaceutical terminology, abbreviations, symbols; knowledge of manufacturing, packaging and labeling of drug products, use of pharmaceutical instruments and equipment; knowledge of metric system/mathematical calculations
