Job Description Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Athletics, the Head Football Coach is responsible for all aspects of the development and administration of a successful NCAA Division II Intercollegiate Football Program. The program will be conducted in accordance with all University and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules, regulations, and policies.

Essential Duties

  • Conduct practice and game coaching in compliance with the University and NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Provide appropriate leadership, direction and supervision relevant to the academic progress and personal development of student-athletes.
  • Prepare effective game strategies; use proven and effective coaching techniques; design and coordinate practice sessions.
  • Create, present, and maintain records of up-to-date lesson plans for pre-season/season practice drills and procedures detailing the desired goals to be achieved.
  • Schedule practice and game preparation sessions. conduct post-game analysis and incorporate it into lesson plans.
  • Scout and research opposing teams. Work with Strength and Conditioning Coordinator for in and out of season strength & conditioning workouts.
  • Motivate individuals to perform at their peak abilities as student-athletes. Monitor the academic success of Football Student-Athletes and encourage high achievement.
  • Respond effectively to concerns expressed by student-athletes about athletic and nonathletic issues.
  • Keep Athletic Director informed of concerns raised by student-athletes. Oversee the recruitment and retention of academically and athletically qualified prospective student-athletes.
  • Commit to the off-season with regards to recruiting, current player management, upcoming budget, scheduling, etc.
  • Arrange and attend recruiting visits to schools, games, and recruiting events, maintaining full and accurate records of recruiting events.
  • Maintain recruiting database with up-to-date contact information for prospective students and coach contacts, as well as a record of all communications and interactions with recruits.
  • Supervise recruiting efforts of Assistant Coaches.
  • Recruit, select, develop, and monitor work performance of Assistant Coaches. Work with Football Assistant Coaches on game preparation, film review and practice schedule.
  • Set game and practice strategy in conjunction with Assistant Coaches to achieve winning results.
  • Support, oversee, and lead the Assistant Coaches assigned to both offensive line (e.g., quarterback, centers, guards, tackles, tight ends), and defensive positions (e.g., defensive back, tackle).

Other Duties

  • Attend all Athletic Department coach’s meetings as well as University Town Halls and Student Affairs Division meetings. Complete all paperwork in a timely manner regarding rosters, purchase orders, meal expenses, eligibility forms, reimbursements, end-of-season reports.
  • Engage with the community—at the University and divisional level—in events and gatherings to promote your team and the athletics department.
  • Aid the Athletic Training and Athletic Communications departments in getting material (from players or coaches) that they need.
  • Arrange all transportation, food and lodging for away games.
  • In charge of distribution, collection, and inspection of all related equipment. Coordinate Work-study assignments as needed (Team Laundry, office work, etc.).
  • Meet regularly with Athletic Director.
  • Maintain a roster size of 85-100 student-athletes.
  • Arrange service projects for the team (at least one event each semester).
  • Assure that team presents a positive image both externally and on campus.
  • Get all information, write-ups, pics, etc. to SID office for releases and social media
  • Committed to attracting and retaining a diverse staff
  • Support other teams, and other Athletic units (Athletic Communication, Athletic Training).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) from an accredited four-year collegiate institution.
  • 7+ years coaching experience at the intercollegiate level or professional level. Experience in coaching and knowledge of the fundamentals, tactics and strategies of coaching intercollegiate Football with ability to recruit talented players for the program.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and management qualities, with a commitment to developing and maintain a positive and productive playing environment for all team members.
  • Proven ability to provide mentoring and leadership to student-athletes and a commitment to student athlete welfare.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and adherence to NCAA/conference rules and requirements relevant to the conduct of an intercollegiate program.
  • Knowledge of athletic recruitment methods and techniques.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with diverse groups.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Excellent analytical, time management and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work and/or travel, include evening, weekend or limited overnight assignments.
  • Must hold and maintain a valid, unrestricted United States driver’s license, with an insurable driving history as determined by Bentley’s insurance carrier.

Work Environment

  • The work environment includes standard office time, but more often time is spent outside on the playing fields at practices or games.
  • A significant amount of time is also spent at traveling tournaments for recruiting purposes and other gym/training facilities, training may occur outside normal business hours including evenings and weekends.
  • May require the ability to work in an outdoor environment in adverse weather conditions including extreme heat and cold

Physical Requirement

  • Physical demands include, but not limited to, standing throughout the day, using a loud voice at practices and events, physical involvement in all practices and workouts with players.
