Job Description:

The Residential College (RC) in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan, http://www.rc.lsa.umich.edu/, is seeking applicants for a full-time Lecturer III to teach courses in the Music Program and to serve as the head of this program. The RC is a four-year, living-learning community and a unit within the College of LS&A serving the undergraduate student population on the University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor campus. This is a full-time, non-tenure track position with a university-year appointment period beginning August 25, 2025.

RC MUSIC PROGRAM

The Residential College Music Program (https://lsa.umich.edu/rc/current-students/curriculum/music-program.html ) educates and empowers students of all levels, including beginners, through process-oriented teaching and music-making. It is led by a team of multi-disciplinary musicians. Courses in the RCMUSIC program include Music Composition, Theory, Foundations, Improvisation, Group Voice, Found Instruments, and ensembles (Chamber Music, Chinese Music, Afro-Cuban). The RC Music Program differs from other performance programs on campus in its commitment to student-led interdisciplinary learning and broad music-making opportunities for students outside the College-Conservatory environment.

Duties

The successful candidate will serve as head of this program and teach five courses throughout the academic year (fall and winter terms), beginning August 25, 2025.

Teaching responsibilities

Other courses may include the existing Music Improvisation and Electronic Music classes or new ones aligned with the program’s mission and suited to the candidate’s specialties. These courses will contribute primarily to the Music Program but course offerings could also contribute to other RC programs, such as the Arts and Ideas Program (the RC humanities major) or the First-Year Writing Seminar Program (intensive writing courses that satisfy the first-year writing requirement). Additional duties include participation in college- and program-wide activities.

Administrative responsibilities

The responsibilities of the program head for the Music Program are listed below; these extend throughout the academic year.

- Hold regular meetings of the faculty in the program

- Oversee the course offerings and curriculum management of the program each year, including review of course descriptions as needed.

- Interact with the RC Academic Services office

- Attend meetings of the RC Curriculum Planning Committee as a representative of the Music Program.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of Employment.
