As a Mechanical Design Engineer II, you will play a key role in designing products that not only meet but exceed customer expectations while adhering to rigorous business, quality, and regulatory standards. In this collaborative environment, you will work alongside colleagues from various departments-including R&D, Marketing, Manufacturing, Regulatory Affairs, and Quality Assurance-gaining valuable insights into the product development process. You will be responsible for preparing thorough documentation in accordance with established procedures, some of which may be submitted to regulatory agencies. With moderate guidance from senior staff, you will have the opportunity to enhance your skills and knowledge. In addition, you may occasionally serve as a subject matter expert on released product engineering efforts, providing a unique perspective on the downstream impacts of design work. This position is ideal for a motivated engineer eager to grow and make a significant impact in the medical device industry.

The Cardiac Surgery Operating Unit develops life-restoring therapies and healthcare solutions that span the care continuum; integrating technologies and applying clinical and economic evidence to increase patient access, improve efficiency of procedures and deliver successful patient outcomes.

This position is in Brooklyn Park, MN within the Cardiac Surgery (CS) Operating Unit and requires on-site presence.

A Day in the Life

In general, the following responsibilities apply to the Mechanical Design Engineer II role. This includes, but is not limited to the following:


  • Develop and evaluate designs, including CAD models and drawings, which meet defined product requirements and that are optimized for manufacturability, reliability, and overall value to the business.

  • Work with external and internal colleagues to determine device requirements and specifications.

  • Plan and execute design studies (FEA, experimental, 1st principles, animal, cadaver) and practically/statistically analyze data to make design decisions.

  • Contribute to risk analyses of designs.

  • Develop and validate test methods and fixtures used to assess designs and generate corresponding documentation.

  • Write test protocols and reports for verification and/or validation of designs.

  • Communicate work status and results via oral presentation and documentation.

  • Investigate product issues, identify root causes, and recommend solutions based upon data.

  • Verify the functionality of product design by developing design test methodology and specifications to ensure product designs meet applicable performance requirements.

  • Support released product engineering programs through consultation as a subject matter expert to ensure sustainable and stable production.

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.

  • Minimum of 2 years of Mechanical Engineering experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 0 years.

Nice to Have


  • Design experience within the medical device industry.

  • Knowledge and experience working within Quality System Regulations for medical devices like GMP, ISO 13485:2005, QSR 21 CFR part 820, and MDR.

  • Knowledge of human cardiac and cardiovascular anatomy and physiology.

  • Proficient with CAD software such as Creo or SolidWorks.

  • Experience developing engineering drawings and BOMs.

  • Experience working in a documentation control system

  • Knowledge and experience with mechanical engineering principles and mechanical design, especially those related to machine component design, hydraulics, and pneumatics.

  • Proficient in GD&T.

  • Experience with statistical data analysis, particularly using Minitab software.

  • Experience with automated data analysis using custom, self-written scripts.

  • Knowledge and experience with Design Verification, Design Validation, and design control.

  • Experience with numerical simulations (FEA, CFD).

  • Proven ability to execute deliverables in a timely manner.

  • Ability to solve problems and provide innovative solutions.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$80,800.00 - $121,200.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance , Health Savings Account , Healthcare Flexible Spending Account , Life insurance, Long-term disability leave , Dependent daycare spending account , Tuition assistance/reimbursement , and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
