SALARY: Range 51 ($40,196.00 - $81,978.00 Per Year)

Distinguishing Characteristics of Work

Under general supervision of the Department Director performs professional accounting work in municipal finance, maintains and reviews fiscal records, performs varied and specialized accounting tasks, prepares financial reports. Supervises clerical employees engaged in bookkeeping or financial report preparation.

Essential Examples of Duties

The following illustrates examples of some of the essential duties and responsibilities of the Accountant. There may be other essential functions, not listed below, in order to accomplish the tasks as presented by the Supervisor.
  • Supervises subordinate accounting clerks, supervises the maintenance of general, property, and subsidiary ledgers, journals, budgetary and accounting records
  • Maintains budgetary controls; and posts and maintains records for various accounts and funds
  • Audits accounts and funds; and reconciles subsidiary and control accounts
  • Reviews posting to determine that correct documents with books of entry
  • Makes adjusting and closing entries; reports the status of accounts as needed
  • Maintains accounting assets; and participates in the preparation of financial statements, and reports
  • Maintains and verifies accounts payable records
  • Prepares a variety of financial reports and statements to illustrate financial disbursements and balances
  • Supervises and participates in the maintenance of control records, prepares reports of cash receipts and expenditures
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, and terminology used in accounting principles and procedures.
  • Ability to complete and analyze financial reports.
  • Ability to make arithmetic calculations with speed and accuracy, apply and adapt established methods to a variety of accounting transactions and problems.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to prepare financial statements and statistical reports.
  • Ability to examine and verify financial documents and reports.
  • Ability to supervise the work of subordinates.
  • Ability to work independently from general instructions.
  • Ability to plan and direct the work of clerical assistance, follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively with other employees, and meet the general public with courtesy and tact.
  • Have a working knowledge of computers.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have ability to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, stand, hear, hands to finger dexterity, handle, feel or operate objects, read and write English.
  • Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office equipment; such as but not limited to a personal computer, calculator, copier and fax machines.
  • Work is performed indoors within a quiet to moderately noisy environment.
  • Must be able to lift, carry and or push articles weighing up to 20 lbs.

Minimum Training and Experience
  • A four-year degree in Accounting or Business Administration with emphasis in Accounting from an accredited institution is required.
  • A minimum of two years of progressively responsible accounting experience is highly desirable.
  • Must have experience with computers and knowledge of spreadsheet programs, preferably Excel.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.
