CORE JOB SUMMARY
The Physician Assistant assesses, plans, and provides patient care, under the supervision of a physician. An employee in this position delivers medical care to a wide variety of neuro oncology patients; examines patients, performs comprehensive physical examinations, and compiles medical data, including patients' health history and physical examination results. Ensures proper illness and injury care and disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. May prescribe medications including narcotics and order diagnostic tests. Advises patients about continuity of care.

Provides general health education and assists with emergency treatment and complex procedures.
Answers calls and participates in audits and inquiries related to billed services.
Records concise, accurate, and legible documentation of medical data on patients' charts.
Reports and documents significant information and changes in patients' conditions.
Interprets laboratory and radiological findings as they relate to patients' clinical presentation and current treatments.
Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM
Department Specific Functions
Advanced Practice Provider including Physician Assistant (PA) for the Neuro Oncology Division will work with five to six Neuro Oncologists in the outpatient setting at our Sylvester Main Campus location and satellites and in the inpatient setting as part of the Neuro-Oncology Consult Service at UHT.
Proven experience in Oncology or Neuro Oncology is highly recommended.
Department Specific Functions:
Performs lumbar punctures (LPs) and other diagnostic procedures, including intrathecal chemotherapy administration as per established division protocols.
Consults with collaborating physician(s) on implementation, evaluation and revision of treatment plans for neuro oncology patients in the outpatient and inpatient setting.
Integrates current knowledge of professional issues, trends in health care and technological advances into scope of practice.
Coordinates care with interdisciplinary health care team in the development and implementation of plan of care for neuro oncology patients including research patients in all settings.
Conducts or participates in multidisciplinary rounds and ensures appropriate and quality care for patients.
Provide chemotherapy teaching and symptoms management for neuro oncology patients in the inpatient and outpatient setting.
Patients' call coverage, including on call service for outpatient calls over the weekend, rounding in the hospital and providing care for patients while admitted at UHT.
Assesses patients by interviewing/examining the patient, reviewing the patient's medical history, physician's diagnosis and orders, diagnostic test results (labs, x-ray, MRI, etc.) to determine medical diagnosis, plan of care and monitor patient's progress.
Obtain and review medical records including physician/consultation notes, lab and diagnostic tests results. Formulates medical diagnoses based on the above data.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams through discussion and assessment of diagnoses.
Work with neuro- oncology triage nurses to assure timely call back to patient calls regarding any medical concerns.
Recognize deviations from normal physical exams and work in collaboration with neuro oncology physicians formulating treatment plans to address health problems and conditions.
Identifies expected outcomes based on the assessment/diagnoses and physician collaboration.
Provides patient/family education regarding disease processes, treatment options, treatment outcomes, possible complications, medications, discharge planning and lifestyle modification.
Ensure ordering and scheduling of all procedures required to assess adverse events and disease response.
Assess and establish follow up care of neuro oncology patients independently.
Communicates plan of care to team members.
Assists in the management of family dynamics and coping mechanisms during acute and chronic phases of patient care.
Evaluates the patient's progress in attaining expected outcomes by follow up with collaborating physician and staff.
Prioritize consults to present to attending physician and round with attending as indicated by the inpatient consult service.
Performs and documents complete physical examinations and comprehensive consult notes, follow up notes, discharge notes, procedure notes and close encounters within 72 hours.
Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities.
Implements interventions to support the patient to regain or maintain physiologic stability.
Assists with the provision of care in accordance with facility, state, and federal regulations.
Monitors the effectiveness of interventions.
Facilitates the patient's transition within and between health care settings, e.g. admitting, transferring, and discharging patients, assuring appropriate referral placements.
Facilitates staff, patient and family decision making by providing educational tools.
