Responsibilities

What you'll be challenged to do:

The Permitting Specialist is responsible for managing and coordinating the permitting process for land development projects. This position ensures that all necessary permits are obtained efficiently and in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. The role involves close collaboration with engineers, planners, developers, and regulatory agencies to facilitate project approvals and keep development timelines on track.

Primary Responsibilities (others may be included):



  • Permit Coordination:

    • Research and identify required permits for land development projects, including zoning, environmental, utility, and construction permits.

    • Prepare and submit permit applications to appropriate agencies, ensuring accuracy and completeness of all required documentation.

    • Track and monitor permit statuses and provide regular updates to project teams.


  • Regulatory Compliance:

    • Ensure all projects adhere to regulatory timelines and submittal formats required for permit processing.

    • Stay informed on changes to regulations, codes, and ordinances affecting land development projects.


  • Collaboration and Communication:

    • Serve as a liaison between the civil engineering team, developers, and permitting agencies.

    • Attend meetings with regulatory agencies to address project-specific concerns or requirements.

    • Respond to agency requests for additional information or revisions.


  • Document Management:

    • Maintain organized records of permits, approvals, and correspondence with agencies.

    • Update internal databases to reflect permitting milestones and statuses.


  • Support Project Teams:

    • Assist engineers and planners in identifying potential permitting challenges early in the design phase.

    • Provide guidance on permit-related timelines and costs to inform project schedules and budgets.

     

Qualifications

What you bring to our firm:


  • High school diploma or equivalent (required).

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint). 

  • Experience with Revu Bluebeam or Adobe Acrobat software.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to build relationships with regulatory agencies and navigate complex regulatory environments.

  • Actively engages multiple perspectives when solving problems, seeks to learn from peers, and encourages reciprocal learning among team members.

What we’d prefer for you to bring to our firm:


  • 2-5 years of experience in permitting or a related role within land development or civil engineering.

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, urban planning, civil engineering, or a related field.

  • Familiarity with municipal land use approval processes, including site plan reviews and subdivision approvals.

  • Knowledge of environmental permitting processes, including wetlands and stormwater management regulations.

     

Work Environment:


  • Office-based with occasional site visits and meetings at regulatory offices.

  • May require travel to project sites or government agencies within the region.
