Job Summary
Technical Specialist, Microbiology

The Technical Specialist - Education is responsible for technical operations of the educational programs, training,
competency assessment of the staff in the Microbiology Laboratory under the direction of the Supervisors and/or Senior Clinical Manager.
This is a highly specialized role within the Microbiology Laboratory requiring a high level of skill.
The Technical Specialist, in their role as Testing Personnel as defined by CLIA, may perform waived and non-waived testing. Under general supervision, carries out all policies and performs all tests in accordance with the department's standard operating procedures. Works independently in an efficient and organized manner to assure accurate results and records. The work requires a professional level of knowledge to read and interpret accurately test results used by providers in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
The Technical Specialist, in their role as Technical Supervisor or General Supervisor as defined by CLIA, may be delegated the responsibility of the technical oversight of the training areas including the day-to-day supervision or oversight of the laboratory operation related to personnel in training, performing testing, and reporting results. Under the general supervision of the Technical Director and Clinical Supervisors, the Technical Specialist-Education is responsible for supervision of trainees at their assigned workstations including Quality Control (QC) review, training, competency assessment of staff.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Technical Specialist - Education is the leader in the Microbiology Laboratory with primary responsibility for managing the training and teaching of various health care professionals. The Technical Specialist - Education is the primary teacher for residents, fellows, and other non-laboratory personnel. The Technical Specialist is supported by the administrative staff in the Microbiology Laboratory as well as the Senior Technologists.
Creates, documents, maintains, plans and implements the training programs including competency assessments for
new procedures adapted into the Microbiology Laboratory and manages the competency review process with Supervisors and Senior Clinical Manager, including the Compliance Officer as needed.
Reviews and approves completed training paperwork and documentation, ensuring that all training documents and
signoffs are documented and maintained in Media Lab Compass module, supported by the Senior Technologists,
and administrative staff in the Microbiology Laboratory
Reviews completed staff competency results to ensure proper completion review of all aspects of required documentation,
supported by Media Lab.
The Technical Specialist - Education for the Microbiology Laboratory serves as the liaison for Compass in Media Lab for Microbiology to the Pathology quality team.
The Specialist is trained on new processes to bring a training and education lens to the development and creation of SOPs for new processes. Assists with determining whether a new competency assessment needs to be created. Oversees the creation of training documents for new processes.
The Specialist reviews and determines whether existing training material reflect the current workflow used in the lab and reviews and approves any required updates to training guidelines.
The Specialist annually reviews completed training documents.
The Specialist develops the training procedures for technical staff and students, both rotating from affiliated programs and for the MGB MLS Training Program.
Qualifications
Requirements:
MLS (ASCP) Certified
Bachelors degree in physical science, medical laboratory, or equal.
Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in clinical microbiology OR minimum of 3 years as a Senior Medical Technologist in the Microbiology Laboratory at MGH AND active national general certification (MLS (ASCP) or Specialist in Microbiology Laboratory (or equivalent) AND total of 3 consecutive years of performance which meets or exceeds expectations at the Senior Medical Technologist level AND thirty-six hours of documented continuing education in previous 3 years.
