Job Summary
General Summary/Overview Statement:
Under the supervision and direction of the Immunopathology Lab Director and Technical Director of the Immunopathology Unit, the incumbent develops and performs various immunohistochemical techniques. This role provides critical diagnostic information for staff pathologists, aiding in disease diagnosis, treatment, and patient management.



Qualifications



Principal Duties and Responsibilities



  • Oversee the Immunofluorescence laboratory within the Immunopathology Unit.

  • Train new technologists in procedures and techniques, evaluate new technology for clinical applications, and assist in updating procedure manuals for laboratory inspections and accreditations (e.g., JCAHO).

  • Serve as the principal technical specialist for the Immunofluorescence laboratory, instructing students, residents, and pathologists in special techniques and test result interpretation.

  • Perform diagnostic direct immunofluorescence staining on skin and kidney biopsies, examining slides with pathologists to detect immune-mediated diseases.

  • Conduct indirect immunofluorescence staining using patient sera to detect autoantibodies in suspected immune-mediated diseases of the skin and kidney. Document findings with photographs and maintain logs.

  • Perform gel electrophoresis, transfer, and Western Blot Analysis for anti-GBM antibody detection for vacation and sick coverage.

  • Conduct enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) for detecting autoantibodies against the glomerular basement membrane (anti-GBM).

  • Maintain quality control logs for equipment, including cryostat, microtome, centrifuge, and refrigerators.

  • Process clinical diagnostic biopsies, dividing specimens for electron microscopy, immunofluorescence, and light microscopic studies.

  • Accession specimens and bill patients for clinical services.

  • Maintain inventory, order supplies, and oversee the quality control of reagents, including antibodies.




Qualifications



  • Minimum of B.S. or B.A. degree in Biology or Chemistry (or equivalent).

  • 3-5 years of laboratory experience.

  • ASCP Certification Required.




Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required



  • Familiarity with immunology, chemistry, computers, and the metric system.

  • Understanding of molarity, normality, molecular weight, formula weight, and dilution preparation.

  • Proficiency in good laboratory techniques and proper chemical handling.

  • Strong mathematical, organizational, and English communication skills.

  • Effective interpersonal and communication abilities, with attention to detail.

  • Ability to follow protocols, devise or adapt techniques, and recognize and respond to novel or emergency situations.

  • Supervisory skills for instructing technologists or residents.

  • Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting.

  • Potential exposure to disease-bearing specimens, hazardous chemicals, or fumes, typical of a clinical laboratory setting.
