Job Description:

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) at the University of Iowa is seeking an Experiential Learning & Assessment Specialist. This role supports a variety of programs and services aimed at enhancing the educational experience and retention of students. Responsibilities include monitoring students' academic, career, and personal goals, providing individualized guidance, arranging necessary accommodations, and preparing reports to inform unit goals. The specialist will also coordinate communication and collaboration with partners to optimize resources and connections. This position aligns with the School's strategic plan to increase experiential learning and high-impact practices and involves collecting and analyzing data for accreditation and assessment purposes.



Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee experiential learning in SJMC, including administering the school's new SCRIPT experiential learning requirement for undergraduate students.
  • Assist with SJMC student events, including scholarship/award and student exhibition to foster engagement and community.
  • Develop and manage relationships with internal (on-campus) and external organizations to foster experiential learning opportunities for SJMC students.
  • Plan, organize and coordinate projects and events with partners to meet program goals. Coordinate communication with partners. Collaborate with partners to maximize resources and connections.
  • Manage grant budgets related to experiential learning, monitor expenditures, and reconcile statements. Determine project and event costs and provide input for budget development.
  • Develop and manage the School's Salesforce database.
  • Create survey tools, collect and analyze data, serve as staff assessment lead to ensure the School is in compliance with the Assessment of Learning Outcomes required by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications.
  • Supervise/mentor student employees as needed.

Education Required

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, mass communication, or other relevant field.



Required Qualifications

  • One to three years' administrative, supervisory, and/or program management experience.
  • Experience with grant funding/administration; familiarity with CRM (like Salesforce); experience with experiential learning.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.



Desired Qualifications

  • Proficiency in computer software applications.
  • Experience in public speaking, technical writing, and/or teaching.
  • Familiarity with University policies and procedures.
  • Experience working with students.
