The Raclin Murphy Museum of Art seeks an enthusiastic and highly organized Assistant Registrar. They will report to the Museum Registrar and work on a team that includes a three-person Exhibition and Art Handling Team.
The Assistant Registrar assists the Museum Registrar in managing the Raclin Murphy Museum's collection of over 31,000 art objects. She/he will be responsible for a broad range of registration functions, including organizing artwork transport and storage, participating in the collection inventory, condition reporting, loans, labels and transportation of art for exhibitions, image reproduction requests, object study requests, and the various tasks related to accessioning a new art object (database entry creation, photography, proper storage, etc.).
Being able to both work independently and as part of a team is critical. He/she should be able to work at a busy pace, multitask, have excellent interpersonal skills, and be a good problem-solver.
He/She must possess excellent organization, communication, and computer skills. Must be detail-orientated and work well with various people (museum colleagues, donors, students, faculty, and the general public, etc.). Must be flexible, work well under pressure, and be able to meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Must be willing and able to travel domestically and internationally as needed with art shipments or on museum business.
Please note: This is a two-year, limited-term, full-time staff position with the possibility of extension.
Experience using Embark, TMS, or similar collection database software is preferred. We prefer someone with 2-5 years of professional experience doing registration or collections management duties and tasks for an art museum, visual arts organization, or history museum. This includes knowledge of current museum professional best practices for fine arts packing, shipping, handling, and condition reporting.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree (4 years) - Art History, Museum Studies, or History. B. A.
Experience: 1 to 2 years in a similar role at an art or history museum or center.
Preferred Qualifications:
M.A. and/or Museum Studies certificate preferred
