Position Summary:

The Director of Scouting and High School Relations at Rice University collaborates with the General Manager and is responsible for evaluating and recruiting student-athletes for the football program. They are responsible for developing, growing, and maintaining positive relationships with high school coaches. This role partners with the coaching staff and the recruiting department to develop effective recruiting strategies.

The Director of Scouting and High School Relations is also responsible for supporting the philosophy, goals, and mission of Rice University and its intercollegiate athletics program, ensuring compliance with departmental, university, American Athletic Conference, and NCAA policies and procedures related to the recruitment of student-athletes.

Workplace Requirements:

This position is exclusively on-site, requiring all duties to be performed in person on campus during regular office hours, as well as mornings, nights, and weekends, based on the team schedule. This role also requires regular travel. Per Rice Policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.

Hiring Range: compensation will commensurate with experience
Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime.

Minimum Requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree
  • Three years of related experience
  • Must possess (or be able to obtain within 30 days of hire) and maintain a valid Texas driver's license with:

    • No more than three moving violations and/or at-fault accidents within the past 36 months
    • No convictions or deferred dispositions for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the past five years

Essential Functions:

  • Assist the General Manager in managing and overseeing scholarship distribution
  • Assist the General Manager in managing the yearly recruiting calendar
  • Ensure compliance within the recruiting department
  • Develop, maintain, and foster positive relationships with high school coaches, with a primary focus on the state of Texas
  • Serve as the Rice Football liaison for high schools and junior colleges within Texas and nationally
  • Assist in coordinating all on-campus official and unofficial visits
  • Manage the evaluation of scholar-athletes and provide assessments for coaches
  • Oversee the evaluation of transfer portal prospects
  • Continuously assess and improve the efficiency of the recruiting department
  • Assist in coordinating off-campus travel for coaches
  • Manage ARMS recruiting software and prospect data management
  • Assist the recruiting staff in identifying prospective student-athletes
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of conference and NCAA rules and regulations related to recruiting
  • Plan and schedule visits with high school coaches regarding student-athlete practice dates; create the travel schedule for assistant coaches, ensuring efficient use of time and financial resources while maintaining compliance with conference and NCAA recruiting rules
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with high school coaches, acting as the primary liaison between the Rice coaching staff and high schools
  • Assist in monitoring the initial eligibility of incoming freshmen, working closely with high school counselors, the NCAA Clearinghouse, and advisors to ensure student-athletes meet academic eligibility requirements; inform coaches of SAT/ACT testing dates to ensure compliance with scholarship requirements
  • Partner with compliance staff to distribute applications and monitor admissions into Rice University; collect transcripts and test scores of prospective student-athletes
  • Provide updates to the recruiting board as directed by the Head Football Coach
  • Communicate effectively with high schools and junior colleges in Texas and beyond
