Job Summary
Working under the direction of the Campus Advising Director, the Academic Advisor/Coach is an integral component of the advising staff for campus-based students. The advisor/coach is responsible for providing holistic support that helps students navigate the institution to meet their academic goals.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
Provide academic advising and coaching to a caseload of students enrolled in campus-based degree programs related to the School of Business and Economics (BUSE), the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), and the School of Natural Science and Mathematics (NSM), as well as exploratory students.
Provide guidance in course selection and degree planning; explain curriculum requirements and school and campus policies.
Coach and facilitate student academic success through appropriate suggestions regarding study habits, time management, and career information resources, referral to appropriate personnel and academic services on campus and explanation in the processing of procedural policies.
Monitor and evaluate student academic progress; serve as liaison with instructors to resolve problems and provide coaching to cultivate academic strategies to include referral to tutoring services, restructuring study habits and/or recommendations regarding campus resources.
Maintain written and electronic student files and records, test scores and related academic advising information; maintain confidentiality and follow FERPA requirements.
Attend and actively participate in recruitment activities and Office of Admission program including Red Wolves Days, VIP Days, Junior Preview Days, and New Student Orientation.
Meet with prospective students and their families during campus visits to explain curriculum requirements, academic policies and support services.
Collaborate with the Office of Financial Aid, the Wellness Center, the Office of Student Records, and the Office of Admissions to ensure efficient transitions for campus-based students.
Attend staff meetings, serve on committees and represent the institution at local, state, and professional organizations; work as a member of the advising team to ensure student inquiries are followed up on in a timely manner; refer students to appropriate departmental or school personnel for further information on specific programs, courses or services.
Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned.
Coordinate and collaborate with professional advisors and academic departments on advising issues; keep up-to-date on changes to general education as well as changes to degree programs; amend advising sheets and web documents as needed.
Cultivate academic strategies associated with student success and implement developmental advising practices to enhance performance, retention, and graduation rates.
Assist with registration, providing guidance in course selection, and facilitating the students' understanding of degree requirements and university policy.
Maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress toward degree completion to stay in accordance with FERPA.
General Responsibilities
Provide academic counseling for students pursuing or considering majors, minors, or certificates.
Guide students in planning their course of study in concert with the departments' curricular requirements; explain curriculum requirements and school and campus policies.
Meet with students in groups and one-on-one to guide students in academic programs that will meet their educational needs and the requirements of their chosen major, minor, and/or certificate.
Assist students in making informed decisions about a choice of major and potential career or graduate school direction; help students to assess their interests, values, and academic skills and to understand these in relation to major choice and potential future career/graduate school options.
Teach students how to navigate university systems, academic processes, and policies; empowers student accountability in academic decisions about courses, career direction, and long-term plans; and provides guidance on avenues for increased involvement as an IU student and in the IU community.
Refer students to appropriate campus resources, such as academic support resources, placement programs, internship and overseas study opportunities, etc.
Track and monitor students' academic progress, review and maintain confidential student records to ensure that students meet requirements and to document advising discussions and communicate this information in a timely manner to students and to appropriate academic offices when necessary.
Represent the advising function as a presenter at campus meetings and recruiting functions; assist in developing written advising materials for use in student events.
Research, recommend, or create best practices for unit or campus initiatives, projects, processes, or programs and may provide guidance to other Academic Advisors.

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
Occasional attendance might be necessary for evening or weekend functions.
