The Rodman will perform field layout and measurements for grade stakes and mark reference points as instructed by Surveyor or Survey Manager. The Rodman will also assist with the capture of project data points utilizing various types of electronic tools.


Responsibilities

  • Assist with construction surveying activities under direction of Survey Party Chief.
  • Hold measuring devices during construction layout activities.
  • Establish points by installing physical markers.
  • Prepare surveying equipment for use.
  • Remove obstructions during construction layout activities.
  • Measure distance between points using measuring tape or electronic equipment.
  • Move and adjust position of survey equipment.
  • Maintain and clean surveying equipment including tracking of calibrations.
  • Ensure security of equipment and work area while conducting operations.
  • Inventory supplies and give supply orders to Survey Party Chief for re-stocking.
  • Display high level of teamwork, integrity, commitment, and leadership in daily operations.
  • Fully understand work instructions, project signage, and safety instructions from tool and equipment manufacturers and prepare and inspect tools prior use to ensure safe and working conditions.
  • Participate in daily Pre-Task Plans, follow safety expectations for operation of equipment and tools, select appropriate equipment for performing work, adhere to safety protocols to perform work, and wear appropriate PPE (Personal Protection Equipment).
  • Identify, communicate, and escalate problems and issues to supervisor for immediate resolution.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with customers, contractors, suppliers and other employees.
  • Other activities, duties, and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Must comply with company’s drug and alcohol abuse policy.


Qualifications

  • One (1) to four (4) years of experience in a comparable Heavy Civil Surveying role is encouraged but not required. Similar relevant experience or proven ability to adapt to this role’s requirements will be considered in lieu of.
  • Post-offer drug/alcohol screen and physical evaluation.


Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. The position regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.


Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The position lifts heavy objects, walks and stands for long periods of time and performs strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions. The employee lifts, pushes, pulls or carries objects; uses abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue; and effectively jumps, sprints or throws objects. The position requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination. The position requires the ability to quickly move arms and legs. The employee must have excellent stamina.
