Virgin Galactic is looking for a Specialist Mechanical Engineer with a background in Hardware Integration for aerospace vehicles. This candidate will need to be a great communicator who works well with others and can lead from the front while working alongside their team to get projects completed.
This position will be primarily based out of our Spaceport America hangar in Truth or Consequences, NM with regular travel to our new Spaceship Factory in Phoenix-Mesa, Arizona. This is a fantastic opportunity to work with all of our unique and cutting-edge vehicles, to include our Spaceship 2 Unity, Mothership Eve, and our next generation of Spaceships, the Delta class. You will be creating innovative designs that meet our demanding requirements through prototyping, hands-on design and working directly with technicians on the vehicle as a part of our standard practice. You will have the opportunity to collaborate and coordinate with multiple groups, including structural integrity, systems, structures, production control, and supply chain.
Additional responsibility and duties will also involve the following:
Develops and refines system level requirements for vehicle systems based on customer and derived requirements
Reviews, updates, and compiles engineering definition of aircraft system components and assemblies based on records from the current vehicle designs
Supports review of manufacturing plans and procedures to ensure compliance with design requirements
Supports the creation of system test plans which will be used to verify the design intent meets requirements
Confers with management, engineering, and other staff regarding manufacturing capabilities, production schedules, and other considerations to facilitate production processes
Develop engineering drawings for parts, assemblies, and installations in 3DExperience & CATIA V5
Develop process specifications and engineering standards
Support production by producing rework/repair dispositions
Maintain Action Item List/Burndown list to present to Integrated Product teams
Develop custom reports such as long lead items and discrepancy lists
Perform trade studies of multiple solutions to present to program leadership
Required Skills, Experience and Education
B.S. Engineering degree from an accredited university
12+ years of relevant work experience within mechanical design on aerospace systems
Knowledge of air vehicle systems, systems integration, engineering design, the drawing release process and subsystems/component qualification
Ability to evaluate flight test and component qualification data for verification and validation purposes and to identify further testing or development/re-design work
Experience with 3D modeling & drafting in 3DExperience, Catia V5, or similar design package
Experience with material and part selection
Experience with interpreting electrical schematics and wiring
Experience with vehicle instrumentation for flight test is a plus
Experience with composite vehicles is a plus
Experience with schematics in Microsoft Visio is a plus
