Position Overview


The Lead Writer, Wexner Medical Center Advancment has the primary responsibility to lead the planning and writing of impeccable communications and marketing materials that help deepen donor commitment to the Wexner Medical Center. A member of the Advancement Marketing and Communications (AMC) department, the Lead Writer, reports to the Director of Marketing and Communications for Wexner Medical Center Advancement.



A highly polished and professional writer, the Lead Writer, plays a critical role in advancing the mission of Advancement, the university, and the Wexner Medical Center. This writer will plan and develop creative, persuasive, and donor-centric content which may include leadership correspondence and remarks for events and speaking engagements, solicitations and annual giving appeals, and donor engagement and stewardship materials. Must be able to write to a variety of voices, at the appropriate tone for senior leadership, and with precision that requires minimal editing or revisions.



The Lead Writer, should possess deep industry knowledge and advanced conceptual understanding, coupled with strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively convey complex information to diverse audiences. A meticulous attention to detail is essential, as is the ability to maintain strict confidentiality when handling sensitive data. Must demonstrate proven success in leading, researching, writing and managing multiple, large-scale copywriting projects to completion.

Department Overview


The Office of Advancement at The Ohio State University builds relationships to inspire life-changing philanthropy. Responsible for overseeing, driving content strategy, and monitoring all Advancement-owned marketing channels focused on donor, alumni, friend, fan, and grateful patient audiences, the Advancement Marketing and Communications department (AMC) has a broad base of responsibilities spanning Advancement that helps us identify connections and develop opportunities for collaboration.




Duties and Responsibilities


80%



  • Leads the planning and writing of impeccable communications and marketing materials that help deepen donor commitment to the Wexner Medical Center.

  • Plans and develops creative, persuasive, and donor-centric content which may include leadership correspondence and remarks for events and speaking engagements, solicitations and annual giving appeals, and donor engagement and stewardship materials.

  • Writes to a variety of voices, at the appropriate tone for senior leadership, and with precision that requires minimal editing or revisions.

  • Develops and implements complex concepts and writes high-quality content, copy and storytelling for a variety of platforms, which may include donor proposals, impact reports, newsletters, press releases, videos, websites, social media, etc.

  • Research and writes compelling stories that highlight the impact of the Wexner Medical Center's research, patient care, and educational initiatives.

  • Collaborates with the Advancement team, Wexner Medical Center marketing, faculty, researchers, and other stakeholders to gather information and create content that aligns with communication goals

  • Evaluates, reviews, proofreads and edits own and others' content to ensure clarity, accuracy, and consistency.

  • Manages multiple writing priorities simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to deadlines.

  • Works independently, manages priorities and deadlines, and determines appropriate methods for completion of new projects.

  • Strictly adheres to university, Wexner Medical Center, and leadership brand and style guidelines.

  • Leads highly complex projects of large scope, provides solutions which may set precedent; projects may have significant and long-term impact.

  • Collaborates with and builds relationships with various colleagues and stakeholders such as development officers and donor experience consultants to produce effective donor-centric communications.

  • Conducts research to support content development; may include interviews with various faculty, staff, patients, and donors,

  • Manages, prepares, researches and develops questions in advance of project kick-off meetings to ensure meeting efficiency and productivity.

  • Collaborates with members of AMC's creative staff to design and implement projects and materials to final delivery.

  • Monitors and evaluates project success from an audience-centric review of marketing metrics as well as an internal AMC efficiency standpoint.

  • Completes special projects and performs other duties as assigned




Required Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree in writing, communications, English, journalism, public relations, marketing or related field

  • Six (6) years of relevant experience.

  • Exceptional writing, editing and proofreading skills.

  • Strong storytelling abilities with a focus on creating engaging and persuasive content.

  • Excellent research and interviewing skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively and build trust-based relationships with diverse teams and stakeholders.

  • Attention to detail, manage multiple projects and ability to adhere to tight deadlines.

  • Past experience in development, fundraising, advancement or other persuasive writing.

  • Knowledge of fundraising principles and donor engagement strategies.

  • Professional portfolio with writing examples required.




Desired Qualifications

  • Master's degree in writing, communications, English, journalism, public relations, marketing, or related field.

  • Eight (8) years of relevant experience; preferred professional writing experience.

  • Experience working in a large and complex organization.

  • An understanding of healthcare and/or academic environments.

  • Facility with advanced tools such as AI.
