Position Summary...

We are seeking a highly experienced Principal Software Engineer specializing in AI Systems to join our team and play a pivotal role in developing our Generative AI developer tooling platform and its associated services. In this dynamic role, you will work on a variety of initiatives, such as designing secure and robust infrastructure for our Generative AI powered applications, deploying LLMs on GPU instances, supporting advanced AI research and development within our public cloud infrastructure, and building Generative AI powered developer tools that will empower a community of over 15,000 developers globally.

About Team:
Building the right technology foundation for Infrastructure & platforms is vital to success at the scale of Walmart. Our team builds and maintains the foundational technologies that support the tech organization. Included in this are data platforms, enterprise architecture, DevOps, cloud computing, and infrastructure. All of these products and services are supported by scalable and powerful infrastructure, ensuring a secure and seamless employee and customer experience across stores, digital channels, and distribution centers.



What you'll do...

• Designing and constructing fault-tolerant infrastructure to support highly available, low latency applications, using containers and checkpointing libraries to maintain reliability despite individual node failures.


• Developing developer tooling applications that utilize LLMs .


• Designing and implementing benchmarks to evaluate software system performance within a Generative AI Platform, and providing recommendations on technology selection.


• Collaborating with cross-functional teams, working closely with Engineers, data scientists, and other stakeholders to comprehend their needs, gather requirements, and develop AI-powered developer tooling solutions.


• Preparing and maintaining technical documentation, reports, and presentations to effectively communicate AI methodologies, results, and recommendations to diverse audiences.


• Staying informed about the latest advancements in Generative AI industry trends, regulatory guidelines, data privacy, and ethical considerations related to AI applications.

What you'll bring:

• 8+ years of experience designing and building distributed systems at scale


• 4+ years of experience as a tech lead or an architect


• 3+ years of experience with the full ML development lifecycle using open-source AI/ML frameworks and public cloud


• Master's degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience with a focus on contemporary AI techniques


• Experience designing large-scale distributed platforms and/or systems in cloud environments such as Azure or GCP


• Experience architecting cloud systems for security, availability, performance, scalability, and cost


• Experience delivering very large models through the MLOps life cycle from exploration to serving


• Experience building GPU clusters in the public cloud with tightly-coupled storage and networking


• Familiarity with GenAI technology stack, including frameworks for prompt engineering, guardrails for GenAI applications, exposure to RAG and agentic RAG.


• Experience working with VectorDBs and other data infrastructure required to efficiently support Generative AI pipelines and production applications


• Experience building applications powered by large language models
