The Painter Sub-Foreperson is responsible for duties associated with administration and operations of the Paint, Glass, and Sign shops. The Painter Sub-Foreperson assists with the planning, scheduling, coordinating and supervising work of painters and painter apprentices.
Duties & Responsibilities
Directly supervises painters and painter apprentices assigned to the Paint, Glass, and Sign shops.
Assigns painters, glass, and sign shop work to the assigned painters and painter apprentices submitted from the Work Management Center to be completed in accordance with prioritized needs and schedules.
Works at the direction of the Painter Foreperson and the Superintendent Building Maintenance.
When requested assists with providing estimates for labor and material cost of jobs assigned by Painter Foreperson, Work Management Center, Project Coordinators, and Superintendent of Building Maintenance, to monitor and control craft related cost.
Assists in making recommendations for hiring and discipline and addresses employee performance issues.
Assist with providing leadership for emergency responses during off normal working hours to handle emergency calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Assists in developing preventive maintenance estimates and schedules.
Performs shop work as needed and directed.
Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Additional Physical Demands
1. Work is assigned through the Foreperson, Work Management Group, Service office, or via the Director Building Maintenance & Grounds, or his Designee in oral or written form. There is very limited supervision provided. The Painter Sub-Foreperson is responsible for assuring their work is completed properly in accord with statues and codes in a safe and timely manner. The Painter Sub-Foreperson is expected to support the Mission, Vision, Values, Guiding Principles and management operational directions and philosophies of Facilities and Services. The Painter Sub-Foreperson is expected to support F&S management operational directions and philosophies. The Painter Sub-Foreperson must exemplify high standards of professionalism, loyalty, craftsmanship, and dedication. 2. Interacts with Campus Customers, Supervision, and peers. Creates a work environment which develops accountability for performance and develops teamwork and unity within the shop and throughout the University campus. 3. May work in extreme weather conditions. 4. Must be aware of potential danger from moving parts and equipment. 5. May be exposed to dust, loud noise, smoke, and cleaning compounds. 6. This position requires the ability to multi-task on a routine basis due to the number of issues that must be dealt with daily. 7. The workload associated with the position can be stressful at times.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Successful completion of a recognized painter apprenticeship program or four (4) years (48 months) of full-time journey-level painter experience.
Three (3) additional years (36 months) of full-time journey-level painter experience.
Possession of a valid State of Illinois driver's license at the time of hire and maintained throughout employment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of painter trade and techniques including maintenance and repair of wall and surface finishes, drywall tape and finishing, glass installation and repair, and street striping.
Thorough knowledge and use of painter, glazier, and sign shops tools and equipment.
Good communication skills
Ability to work effectively with and understand customer needs and requirements.
Ability to read and understand blueprints, schematics, etc.
Thorough knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and safe and proper use of tools and equipment, and University Building Standards.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 1922 - Painter Sub-Foreman position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the search close date. Salary is based on the prevailing rate which is currently $41.04/hour. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
