Viavi’s OSP division is looking for an engineer or scientist with expertise in optical coatings. The position will report in to the research and development group, with a leading role in materials, process, and product development for optical coatings for applications in aerospace, consumer electronics, and others. This position is in Santa Rosa, California. VIAVI’s Santa Rosa facility manufactures products for applications in consumer electronics, spectral sensing, government, anti-counterfeiting, and automotive markets.
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
Deposition process development
Develop new processes that lead to improved product yields, throughput, and durability
Materials development
Explore and develop new optical coating materials for UV, VIS, IR wavelength ranges
Deposition technology development
Research new deposition methods and assess their potential
Optical coating design and modeling
Design various types of optical coatings (bandpass, edge filters, anti-reflection coatings, etc.), model experimental results and refine optical properties
Interface with various production engineering groups to transition products or processes into manufacturing
M.S. or higher degree in Materials Science, Physical, Chemical, Electrical, Optical Engineering is preferred
Minimum of 5 years of experience in optical coating industry
Detailed knowledge of optical coating deposition processes such as sputtering, evaporation, and ion-assisted deposition; good general knowledge of coating equipment hardware/software, optical monitoring, and optical coating characterization
Proficient with optical coating design software (TFCalc, Optilayer, or related)
Practical programming experience (Python, MATLAB or equivalent), knowledge of machine learning algorithms and data visualization tools to solve complex problems in optical coating modeling and design
Analytical thinker; detail oriented; methodical problem solver; familiar with design of experiment (DOE), statistical process control (SPC), and failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA).
Passion for hands-on problem solving
Experienced with cleanroom work environment.
Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to interface with all levels of staff and leadership.
