The University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, Department of Internal Medicine is seeking a PA/ARNP to provide medical care and management for patients at the North Liberty Hospital, exercising autonomy in medical decision-making while providing consultative care to orthopedic patients. Function independently to plan, deliver, and evaluate health care for the Internal Medicine consult populations. Facilitate the transition of care from the ED to inpatient/observation services. Focus on the caring for hospitalized patients to manage care and length of stay, improve resource utilization and decrease costs to patients and the institution while providing personalized care. KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Provision of Medical Care; Collaboration with Care Team:
Perform /order medical diagnostic, therapeutic procedures, and prescribe, dispense or deliver medication.
Consult/collaborate with other care team members on primarily orthopedic patients.
Provide support for rapid responses and Code Blues called for the entire shift. Provide first response services for rapid responses from 4pm-6pm (orthopedic APPs will be first response at other hours). ER staff will be first response for Code Blues
Use judgment to apply/adopt information within total clinical picture to address health issues.
Influence others to adopt best practices.
Staff the Internal Medicine consult line from 10:00 am-6:00 pm. You will collaborate with an internal medicine consult physician, who will also be seeing consult patients, each day in this role.
Compliance with Internal Policies and External Regulations for Safe and Effective Care Delivery and Health Profession and Education:
Complete patient medical records, reports, and forms to record treatment for treatment record and billing purposes.
Improve quality of care by performing chart reviews and participating on performance improvement committees.
Education/ Health/ Promotion/ Research:
Provide health education to patients and medical education to health professions students and residents.
Participate in ongoing research and professional development of self and other staff.
Administration/ Human Resources Management:
Establish and maintain procedures and systems to assure staff compliance with policies and standards of care.
Initiate corrective action as needed.
Serve on committees to enhance patient care and operations.
Assure team provides effective collaboration/communications.
May provide feedback and coaching to other team members to assure quality of care.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Supervision is received from a Physician or other designated official.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Functional supervision may be exercised over support staff.
Education/License Requirements:
Physician Assistant (PA): Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA.
Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP): A Master's degree is required. A Master's degree in Nursing is preferred. If a Master's degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is required.
ARNP - Current certification in specialty area and licensure as ARNP in state of Iowa is required.
ARNP - Current license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa is required.
Required Qualifications:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
Reasonable (1-3 years) experience in area of Internal Medicine clinical practice or previous experience in specified hospital specialty area or demonstrated knowledge of area of clinical practice is required.
Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
Desired Qualifications:
Experience providing overall medical care and provide medical management for adult patients in a General Internal Medicine inpatient setting is highly desirable.
Experience exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided is highly desirable.
Experience managing length of stay, improve resource utilization and decrease costs to patients and the institution while providing personalized care is highly desirable.
Experience with the evaluation and treatment of General Internal Medicine patients and the supervision of General Internal Medicine procedures is highly desirable.
