Job Description:

The Fresno Bee is seeking an ambitious bilingual reporter to cover the Latino communities in California's Central Valley. Fresno County, located in the heart of California’s diverse San Joaquin Valley, is a community in transition. Latinos are the largest ethnic community in the county, playing a significant role in shaping the community’s culture, economy and education needs. We are looking for a reporter who can capture the growing political power and cultural influence of the Valley’s Latino community, as well as the challenges they confront.

This reporter will contribute to coverage, report and write articles, and develop trust with residents in Fresno’s urban core and its rural communities, including those from disadvantaged communities. The ideal candidate will be compassionate, collaborative and creative about how to craft stories that serve the community’s needs and resonate with readers.

 

These stories will be published in the bilingual Vida en el Valle, as well as The Fresno Bee and other McClatchy publications.

This reporter also will be part of La Abeja, a weekly newsletter focusing on Latino communities in the Central Valley — a collaborative product among The Fresno Bee, The Modesto Bee and The Sacramento Bee.

Key responsibilities:

• Report and write compelling stories that resonate with readers and serve the community’s needs.
• Regularly include readers in your reporting, from identifying story ideas to developing a diverse network of sources.
• Cover stories for the bilingual Vida en el Valle, The Fresno Bee and other McClatchy publications.
• Contribute to La Abeja, a weekly newsletter focusing on Latino communities in the Central Valley.
• Work with a team of journalists across the Central Valley, delivering stories and participating in strategic and event planning.

Minimum Requirements:

• Fluency in Spanish, both written and spoken; ability to interview, write in both Spanish and English
• Strong reporting and writing skills, excellent news judgment and a demonstrated ability to “see the story” that is going to matter to readers
• Unwavering commitment to accurate, ethical journalism
• Demonstrated ability to use social media platforms to reach and engage with audiences
• Proficiency in using analytics to determine which stories resonate with audiences
• Skill in storytelling using a variety of tools and platforms, including photo and video
• Strong interpersonal skills, including empathy and the ability to take and give constructive criticism
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, data-driven environment shaped by feedback and experimentation

The anticipated annual salary for this position is between $24.52 and $30.77 per hour based on a 40-hour workweek. Individual base pay may vary within that range depending on job-related knowledge, department equity, skills, experience, and relevant education.
