Alfred State College is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Admissions Counselor to join our dynamic admissions team. This role is instrumental in guiding prospective students through the college application process, fostering relationships with students, families, and school counselors, and supporting the institution's enrollment goals.

The Admissions Counselor is a key member of the admissions team who will help achieve the enrollment goals for Alfred State. They will be responsible for managing a student caseload, reviewing applications, and conducting outreach efforts, particularly in the Long Island and Lower Hudson Valley territories. This position requires a passion for student success, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to represent the university's values and programs to a diverse range of applicants.

Key Responsibilities:

Student Recruitment & Outreach:

  • Represent Alfred State at college fairs, high school visits, and recruitment events (both in-person and virtual).
  • Build relationships with high school counselors, community organizations, and prospective students.
  • Serve as the primary admissions representative for the Long Island and Lower Hudson Valley territories.

Student Advising & Support:

  • Guide prospective students and their families through the admissions process.
  • Provide information on academic programs, student life, financial aid, and scholarship opportunities.
  • Offer personalized counseling to help students make informed college decisions.

Application Review & Admission Decisions:

  • Evaluate student applications holistically, ensuring they meet Alfred State's admission criteria.
  • Make recommendations for admission based on academic performance, extracurricular involvement, and personal statements.

Event Planning & Coordination:

  • Assist in organizing and executing on-campus and virtual admissions events, including Open Houses, Accepted Student Days, and campus tours.

Data Management & Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate records of prospective student interactions.
  • Analyze recruitment data to inform outreach strategies and improve enrollment efforts.

Collaboration & Team Engagement:

  • Work closely with the admissions team to develop and refine recruitment strategies.
  • Contribute ideas and insights to enhance the prospective student experience.


Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to connect with students, families, and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize responsibilities, and work both independently and as part of a team.
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with college admissions processes and trends.
  • Willingness to travel for recruitment events and work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Proficiency with CRM systems (e.g., Slate).
  • Valid driver's license required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of SUNY and Alfred State College.
  • Experience in college admissions, higher education, or a related field.


Additional Information:

The starting salary for this position is $55,151 and is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
