Position Summary:



As the Director of Planning and Optimization, you will be responsible for leading the strategic development and implementation of plans to maximize efficiency and effectiveness across various operational aspects of the organization. You will collaborate with senior leadership to align planning efforts with the organization's mission and objectives, and drive initiatives to optimize resource allocation, streamline processes, and improve overall performance.



Essential Duties / Responsibilities:




  • Team Guidance and Assistance:
    • Answer questions and offer guidance to the team
    • Coaching/Mentoring
    • Coordinate with Trainers on new practices to ensure uniform processes
    • Contribute to the creation and maintenance of process guides and department tools
  • Reporting:
    • Run various reports daily to capture potential issues, ensure accuracy and maintain compliance
    • Report Department Errors to Management to track training and development needs
    • Investigate and Research escalated issues.
    • Act as a back up for all Customer Care duties as needed to ensure all functions are performed within KPI.
    • Answer internal calls for the 2050 line to ensure that the organizational needs are met in a timely manner.
  • Network Reliability:
    • Uphold network reliability standards.
    • Vigilantly monitor trip plans to detect deviations.
    • Identify and rectify gaps in cargo conveyance, optimizing operational cycles.
    • Drive process improvements across Operations and inter-departmental functions.
  • Service Design and Integrity:
    • Establish robust processes to support non-standard services and effectively onboard operations teams.
    • Manage service failures attributed to vendors, swiftly identify recovery actions, assess costs, and implement corrective measures.
  • Monitor Cargo Velocity:
    • Proactively monitor idle cargo.
    • Strategize optimal routings, encompassing rail networks, ocean routes, and discharge gateways.
    • Identify and eliminate sub-optimal routes to enhance efficiency.
  • Data Integrity:
    • Proactively identify data integrity issues and liaise with Operations teams for resolution.
    • Enhance reporting mechanisms to support strategic decision-making.
    • Foster real-time cargo visibility to bolster operational efficiency.
  • Monitor KPI/Cost Items:
    • Continuously monitor KPIs and operational expenditures (OPEX).
    • Develop comprehensive cost reporting mechanisms.
    • Innovate processes to drive down costs.
    • Accurately capture the cost-to-serve for non-standard service offerings.
    • Oversee cost recovery activities to ensure timely customer invoicing.
  • Maintain Operations Reporting:
    • Regularly update the Agility Action Plan progress on a weekly basis.
    • Prepare monthly KPI reports, offering insights on year-over-year (YOY) performance and budget versus actual expenditures.
    • Generate ad-hoc reports as required.
  • Contract Execution and Optimization:
    • Spearhead the development, implementation, and administration of Control Tower activities.
    • Ensure Operations' KPIs align with CMA Rail contract requirements for MAG & Balance.
    • Monitor and report on Rail MAG & Balance performance, implementing solutions to address shortfalls within routing and execution parameters.
  • Project Management:
    • Provide oversight on Operations projects, leveraging digital solutions for success.
    • Coordinate with application tools/workflow teams to optimize processes through Business Enterprise Systems (BES) or Business Intelligence (BI) initiatives.
  • Miscellaneous related duties or projects as assigned.

  • Proven experience in strategic planning, operations management, or a related role, preferably in a leadership capacity.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze data and identify insights to drive decision-making.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and senior leadership.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate teams to achieve goals.
  • Knowledge of industry best practices, emerging trends, and technologies related to planning and optimization.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, and effectively manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong business acumen and financial management skills, with the ability to understand and interpret financial data and metrics.



Education and Experience Requirements:




  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, operations management, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • 6+ years of Industry and General experience required.
