CLASSIFICATION: Environmental and Occupational Health Specialist I (ESOH)

GRADE: Exempt; Regular Full-Time

LOCATION: Bldg. 954, Eglin AFB, FL – On Site

POSITION START DATE: October 1st, 2024

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Environmental and Occupational Health Specialist I uses collection methods, applies standards, and verifies controls in performing Industrial Hygiene (IH) surveys with general supervision and instruction. Works with test site supervisors and government specialists to ensure environmental and occupational compliance per local instructions, Air Force publications, and laws. May be required to work in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to enter/oversee contaminated areas to assess situations, collect samples or assist in cleanup. May guide/assist engineers or technicians in planning/performing work of environmental testing, construction, and related fields. Performs routine environmental assessments and assists with determining best method for spill response and collecting/transporting hazardous waste. Works with ESOH teammates to address hazardous material management and hazardous waste collection site questions. Maintains records, creates charts/briefings/reports. Works as a team member and applies professional judgment and ethics to accomplish tasks/projects without jeopardizing health/safety. Accomplishes required training and maintains required certifications as needed.

GENERAL DUTIES: Analyzes workplaces relative to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, ventilation, noise, air/lighting quality, etc. at work centers across the Eglin Test area and other geographically separated work centers. Conducts research to stay current on laws, policy, best practices, and issues in the Environmental, Health and Safety fields. Monitors/examines work processes and facilities to determine related hazards or to measure conditions. Assists with identifying discrepancies and recommends improvements in periodic site environmental and occupational health assessments. May accomplish training to support contract/mission requirements in job related areas such as respirator training, audiograms or first aid/AED training or instructing. Uses a computer/MS Office to create data such as reports, databases, charts/graphs, briefings, and email. Communicates well with Air Force personnel, E-OMS contract management, all levels of supervision and employees in their workplace. Functions with an emphasis on problem-solving, interpersonal skills, team building, time management and good communication skills.



Job Requirements:

OTHER DUTIES: Supports E-OMS contract operational objectives. Observes company Quality, Safety, Environmental, Security and Administrative policies; supports process improvements. Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A two-year degree from an accredited school in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Sciences, or closely related course of study is required. A minimum of two years’ experience in the environmental/occupational health field is highly desirable. Certifications related to Industrial Hygiene or Environmental Sciences are highly desirable. Basic knowledge of Environmental, Safety, and Occupational Health (ESOH) issues is required. Basic knowledge in Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidance, protection against radiation, hazardous noise, occupational exposure, and other workplace hazards is required. Basic experience in industrial hygiene techniques for hazard assessment, contamination measurement, sample collection and testing, and interpretation of lab results is desirable. Experience and proficiency in Microsoft programs, maintaining records and creating reports is required. A basic understanding of hazardous materials accountability; spill cleanups; remediation and mitigation; hazardous waste management; collection and disposal; and monitoring of soil, water and air pollutants is also desirable.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Candidate must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance. Supports E-OMS operational objectives; observes company Quality, Safety, Environmental, Security and Administrative policies. Supports Process Improvement.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: May perform work assignments in a temperature and humidity-controlled environment. Some tasks and assignments will require work performance in outside environments in heat or cold with exposure to the conditions and wildlife typical to Florida or in industrial work locations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to drive government vehicles on paved or dirt roads, work in respirator or protective suit, lift/carry up to 50 pounds, climb stairs/ladders and walk various terrains. Requires full mobility to stoop, bend, reach, stretch, and operate equipment requiring good dexterity.
