General Position Description:

Provides college-wide leadership and supervision for the design, implementation, and evaluation of the learning-centered Student Development Program and student leadership program. Manages and is accountable for the college-wide student activity fee budget. Collaborates with senior leadership to develop strategies to meet program goals; oversees the planning and implementation of all activities. Brings subject matter expertise related to the student development program as well as Federal, State, and local regulations to support the alignment of department goals to College goals. Exercises discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance daily.

Description of Job Function:

1. Provides college-wide leadership and supervision for the design, implementation, and annual review of Valencia's Student Development Program that includes: student activities, student governance, student leadership, student organizations, recreational activities, and community service.

2. Directs, creates, and implements policies, providing operational oversight. Evaluates alternative courses of action; guides the direction of the program to include project implementation to meet departmental strategic goals within budget and time constraints.

3. Develops curriculum for student activity programs that focus on student learning, leadership, and personal development.

4. Supervises Student Development staff to ensure alignment of college-wide goals. Guides, evaluates, and delegates work, ensuring compliance with applicable rules, laws, and guidelines. Completes annual performance development process with each assigned employee according to College policy and the prescribed timeline. Supports program improvements and encourages professional development and growth of the team's skills and performance.

5. Manages and is accountable for the annual Student Activity Fee Budget process and results through a representative college-wide committee.

6. Engages college-wide Student Development in the design, implementation, and evaluation of required and/or traditional events and programs such as Week(s) of Welcome, Spirit Day, Constitution Day, etc.

7. Develops, implements, and evaluates collaborative intra-departmental/inter-divisional programs, services, and initiatives.

8. Organizes and implements student feedback systems including focus groups, online surveys, and/or other evaluation strategies that assess campus climate. Directs the creation of tools to measure and assess program goals in partnership with senior leadership. Evaluates the effectiveness of information obtained and performs data analysis for identifying trends to support decision-making.

9. Responsible for the review and negotiation of Student Development college-wide contracts for student activities or initiatives in consultation with the College Attorney and Procurement.

10. Maintains integrity of student activities expenditure process by complying with state statutes, college travel policy, and college procurement requirements.

11. Collaborates with College Administration and coordinates the Student Development staff to support student registration periods.

12. Establishes and encourages effective communication systems between Student Development and other learning leaders including and not limited to: college-wide and campus administrators, Academic and Student Affairs Deans, faculty and staff, procurement and finance, and other administrators.

Required Minimum Education:

Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited institution.


Other Required Qualifications:

Five years (5) of progressively responsible leadership, administration, project/program management, and/or supervision experience in higher education.


Preferred Education & Field of Study:

Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution.


Student personnel, counseling and guidance, or higher education administration.


Preferred Type of Experience:

Demonstrated leadership in developing and implementing creative and successful student development programs.Budget management experience with diverse constituencies.Community college teaching, counseling, academic or co-curricular program advising, or administrative experience.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1. Knowledge of student development theory and curriculum development and its learning-centered application.


2. Skill in effectively communicating with diverse audiences interpersonally, orally, and in writing.3. Skill in the use of personal computers and general office software.4. Ability to design and implement program assessment and evaluation.5. Ability to motivate persons of diverse backgrounds and focus their energy towards mutual outcomes.6. General Working Conditions:

This job primarily operates in a professional office environment. The employee will routinely operate standard office equipment including but not limited to computers, keyboards, mouse, phones, photocopiers, printers, scanners, filing cabinets and fax machines. While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate. Typical physical competencies include but are not limited to frequently remaining stationary, moving, reaching, positioning self and occasionally ascending/descending, lifting/moving objects weighing between 5-15 pounds. This job also entails frequently communicating, discerning and exchanging information, detecting and perceiving objects up close, at a distance, and the ability to adjust focus.
