We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Energy and Sustainability Manager to oversee and optimize energy and utility management across our Edwardsville, Alton, and East Saint Louis facilities. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in energy procurement, efficiency projects, and sustainability practices. This role involves managing utility data, implementing energy-saving strategies, and overseeing waste recycling tracking, all while ensuring progress toward sustainability benchmarks.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Energy and Utility Management:
    • Monitor and manage energy and utility usage for multiple locations.
    • Analyze utility usage data from invoices, internal metering, and billing systems.
    • Identify and plan energy efficiency projects, including cost-benefit analysis.
    • Review construction projects from an energy efficiency perspective and provide recommendations.
  2. Data Analysis and Reporting:
    • Collect, compile, and oversee the analysis of energy billing and consumption data, mechanical or electrical subsystem energy data, and other relevant operational data.
    • Use data to track and report progress towards sustainability goals and benchmarks.
    • Prepare detailed reports on energy and utility management, including the University’s progress toward sustainability targets.
  3. Project Management:
    • Conduct jobsite observations, field inspections, and sub-metering to assess energy consumption and identify potential Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs).
    • Prepare and present cost-benefit analyses for potential energy efficiency projects.
    • Collaborate with Facilities Management (FM) departments to implement energy-saving projects.
    • Review projects managed by others in FM to ensure they adhere to energy efficiency standards.
  4. Waste and Recycling Oversight:
    • Oversee waste recycling data collection, focusing on waste stream reduction and reporting.
    • Develop and implement strategies to minimize waste and enhance recycling processes.
  5. Consultation and Coordination:
    • Procure electricity, gas, and renewable energy through coordination with energy consultants.
    • Work closely with other departments and stakeholders to support sustainability initiatives and ensure successful project implementation.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
2. Any one or combination totaling three (3) years (36 months) from the categories below:
A. college course work in facility management, operations management, or a closely related field, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
- 60 semester hours or an Associate’s Degree equals one (1) year (12 months)
B. training from a vocational, technical, or an armed forces program which includes building operations such as coordination of building maintenance, construction management, hospitality, or closely related experience.
C. work experience which includes building operations such as coordination of building maintenance and work orders, construction management, hospitality, or closely related experience.
3. One (1) year (12 months) of supervisory or administrative experience which includes building operations such as coordination of building maintenance and work orders, construction management, hospitality, or closely related experience

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s degree in Energy Engineering, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or closely related field;
OR
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Finance, Sustainability, or another technical field, or an MBA with demonstrated knowledge of energy systems, energy use metrics, and the deregulated energy market.
2. Experience with large data sets, energy use metrics, measuring and calculating energy use.
3. Demonstrated knowledge of building systems and their effect on energy consumption and efficiency.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs)

1. Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, spreadsheets, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology.
2. Knowledge of electronic equipment, computer hardware and software, and their applications.
3. Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership techniques, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
4. Ability to identify measures or indicators of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance, relative to the goals of the system.
5. Ability to understand implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making.
6. Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
7. Ability to exhibit strong organizational skills and maintain detailed, accurate records.
8. Ability to communicate effectively as appropriate for the needs of the audience.
9. Ability to interpret work related documents, policies, and procedures.

Must be able to operate a university administrative vehicle.
Occasional work in all weather conditions and exposure to rotating machinery, high noise levels, and slip and fall hazards.
Must be able to bend, stoop, reach, climb and kneel.
