Job Description:

The Department of Psychiatry at Iowa Health Care is seeking an Associate Research Scientist to serve as a member of the UI Addiction and Recovery Collaborative (UI ARC) team. This position will oversee the development and implementation of comprehensive evaluation plans to ensure program operations, activities, and services align with and are consistent with goals and objectives of research and service grants/projects. This includes identifying and selecting appropriate measurements for evaluation; performing data analyses, data monitoring, and data interpretation; and designing and authoring reports. The associate research scientist will also identify prospective funding opportunities; assist with design, preparation, assembling, and submission of grant proposals; and comply with reporting as required for existing grant-funded projects.



Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

• Work as part of an interdisciplinary team to plan, conduct, and oversee the evaluation of grant funded programs using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Lead the evaluation team, which will include other evaluator(s) and research/service grant project coordinator(s).
• Oversee and monitor multiple evaluation projects concurrently.
• Understand the context of a program and how it affects planning, implementation, outcomes, and evaluation.
• Ensure evaluation activities are done in a culturally competent manner.
• Oversee the administrative functions, including the design and development of projects implementation, development of data collection measures and instruments, and program evaluation tools.
• Develop and articulate program goals and objectives in a structure supporting evaluation.
• Advise Principal Investigators and project teams in project implementation and troubleshooting implementation barriers.
• Develop and test data collection tools to support evaluation projects and activities.
• Oversee data collection, data entry, and data audit. Monitor data collection.
• Generate queries, reports, exports, and other data as needed. Provide quantitative, graphical, and qualitative analysis. Assist in the preparation of materials as requested for reporting to funding sources.
• Determine, plan, and execute analyses for various addiction medicine projects and surveys. Analyze data for relevance and data integrity. Compare results of scientific investigations to previously published work.
• Write computer code (in SAS, R, or other appropriate software) to perform analyses and prepare the corresponding reports.
• Prepare data, compute descriptive statistical analyses, and write reports with minimal supervision.
• Assist the team in the performance of more complex statistical analyses and the preparation of reports resulting from such analyses. In conjunction with this responsibility, the candidate must possess an ability and willingness to learn new statistical theory and applied techniques as these are developed or adopted.
• Assist in the preparation, review, and editing of the relevant parts of manuscripts (e.g. methods section) and other reports resulting from the research project.
• Work with the team of investigators (including those from other institutions) to identify, accommodate, and prioritize the statistical analysis needs of the research team.
• Contribute to new or continuing research grant proposals to obtain funding for research activities. May serve as co-PI.
• Educate the evaluation team in substantive issues or statistical principles and practices relevant to the success of individual projects.
• Provide service to the scientific community, university, and general public. Review submitted manuscripts and research proposals. Consult and collaborate with research community. Participate in public outreach activities as required by funding agencies. May participate in national meetings in the discipline.
• Ability to work independently, meet deadlines efficiently, and be highly self-motivated and organized.



Supervision

Supervision is received from the principal investigators on assigned projects and supervision may be assigned over assigned research and/or support staff.



Required Qualifications

The qualified candidate will possess a Ph.D. that involves quantitative methods, broadly defined.
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills are required.

Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.



Desirable Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to function independently and in a team environment.
Experience in the analysis of epidemiological and/or medical research data.
Experience with repeated measures analysis, linear and non-linear mixed effects regression, and survival analysis.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Strong analytical skills.
Ability to work across all functions/levels as part of a team.
Experience in writing proposals for government and/or external funded research.
Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
