Governors State University is looking to hire a Coordinator of Civic Engagement for the Center for Student Engagement and Intercultural Programs. Under the Director's general direction, the Coordinator of Civic Engagement and Intercultural Education (CEIE) transforms student lives through leadership education, identity development, and community engagement. The coordinator creates monthly programming that enhances cultural and civic awareness, diversity, and service. This position will be responsible for planning and delivering intercultural education programming to promote intercultural competence and greater cross-cultural understanding on campus and in the community. The coordinator provides students opportunities to learn and broaden their multicultural lens, serve the campus and community, and enhance leadership skills.

Essential Responsibilities

40 % Serve as the coordinator of intercultural and thematic programming to promote a robust portfolio of co-curricular programs throughout the academic year including, but not limited to, Latinx Heritage Month, LGBTQ+ History Month, Hunger and Homelessness Awareness, Black History Month, Women's History Month, Dr. Martin Luther King (MLK) Day, etc. Develop and maintain programming that is inclusive to all members of Governors State University (GovState) community in the intercultural learning experience through reflection, celebration, education and interaction. Evaluates programming via means of student surveys and reports monthly metrics for student engagement and learning.


20 % Oversight and management of the GovState Food Pantry to ensure students experiencing food insecurities are provided a campus resource. Recruits and manages volunteers for monthly delivery. Identifies and orders necessary items to stock the food pantry and provides monthly reporting. Participates in quarterly regional meetings and essential trainings. Obtains food safety certification via Northern Illinois Food Bank and ensures re-certification every two years.


10 % Serves as the staff advisor to Kaleidoscope, a community-service based student council. As staff advisor, the coordinator will support both on and off-campus service-learning initiatives. The coordinator is accountable for recruiting and retaining students to serve on Kaleidoscope. Coordinates and attends the week-long Alternative Spring Break Trip (ASB). which takes place within the U.S. or internationally during the university's scheduled spring break.


10 % Collaborates with various campus partners and stakeholders to coordinate and facilitate programs supporting the education and respect for diverse cultures, backgrounds and points of view. Programming may include, but is not limited to Constitution Day, 9/11 Day of Remembrance, Voter Engagement Initiatives, etc.


10 % Attends weekly departmental and/or individual meetings as well as departmental events as needed which may require weekend or evening hours (advanced notice provided).


5 % Maintains webpages in relation to position's responsibilities.


5 % Other duties as assigned.





Starting Salary: $48,652.50
(This is a non-unionized position. Salary starts at the base and is determined based on Education and Experience exceeding the minimum qualifications).

Required and Preferred Qualifications

REQUIRED: COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY TRANSCRIPTS, WHICH INCLUDES THE EARNED DEGREE AND CONFERRED DATE MUST BE ATTACHED FOR CONSIDERATION OF THIS POSITION (See "Special instructions to applicants" section below)
Minimum Qualifications:
*Bachelor's degree in intercultural studies, student personnel, counseling, higher education administration, social work, or a related field.
*One (1) year of professional work experience in student affairs, student development, program/event management, student-based community-service, non-profit, or a related field.
*One (1) year of professional work experience in student engagement.
*Demonstrated experience in organizational, human relations, problem solving and communication skills; and the ability to develop and maintain effective partnerships with internal and external constituents in connecting programs and services offered in the university.
*Ability to work autonomously, take initiative, and establish work priorities ensuring timely completion of responsibilities.
*Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships in/with a diverse group/environment, confidence in developing and communicating programs to stakeholders and campus partners.
Note: Master's degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.



Desired Qualifications:
*Master's degree in intercultural studies, student personnel, counseling, higher education administration, social work, or a related field.
*One (1) year of professional work experience advising student leaders and organizations.
*Attention to detail.
*Familiarity with social media platforms and technology.
