Job Description:

Notice is hereby given that the Fairlawn Civil Service Commission will administer an examination for the above position.  Candidates must meet the following requirements at the time of examination and at time of appointment.

EXAMINATION DATE:   Wednesday, November 20, 2024 at 5:30 P.M at the Fairlawn-Kiwanis Community Center, 3486 S. Smith Road, Fairlawn OH  44333.

DEFINITION:   A Street Repairman is primarily responsible for performing repairs and maintenance of City streets, storm sewer lines, buildings, parks, street signs, and other service-related facilities and equipment. The person appointed to this position will be on call, may be called to respond when off-duty, shall be available for emergency snow removal and responses to other City emergencies, and shall perform such other duties as may be required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school graduate or proof of G.E.D.  A minimum of one (1) year of experience in performing manual labor and operating light, medium and heavy equipment utilized in street maintenance, landscape/grounds maintenance and sewer line maintenance.  Work may require heavy physical exertion and may be performed under adverse weather conditions outdoors.  Possess and maintain a valid State of Ohio Driver’s license with an acceptable driving record, proof of liability insurance when operating a City vehicle, and be insurable under the City’s liability policy.  Must possess or be able to obtain a State of Ohio Class B Commercial Driver’s license within ninety (90) days of employment and maintain license throughout the term of employment.  If required after hire, must obtain a valid pesticide and/or ornamental weed control application license(s).

EXAMINATION:   The examination will consist of a written test. Successful candidates under consideration for the position will be required to pass a medical examination, psychological examination and a thorough background investigation. A performance test may be required at the Service Director’s discretion.   

PAY SCALE: $45,850.77 entry / Completion of 1 Year $60,542.25 / Completion of 4 years $75,748.03 based

                           on current Union Contract. Candidates with a current Class B CDL will be hired at $60,542.25

 

EXAMINATION FEE: A non-refundable fee of $20.00 is required to take this examination, payable in cash or money order (no personal checks) at the time the application is submitted.  An exemption from this fee may be granted upon receipt of a notarized Poverty Affidavit from the applicant. 

Applications are available online at www.fairlawn.us, or the City of Fairlawn Administrative Office, 3487 S. Smith Road, Fairlawn, Ohio between the hours of 8:00 am and 3:30 pm.   The complete and notarized application, documentation, and examination fee must be received by 3:30 P.M. on November 12, 2024.  Applications will not be accepted after that time.  A photocopy of your driver’s license must be submitted with your application. 

Extra Credit: The following extra credit will be added to your passing score of 70% or above if required documentation is submitted WITH YOUR APPLICATION.

• Honorably discharged veterans who are residents of the State of Ohio and have served 6 months or more of active duty in the regular Armed Forces of the United States of America, will be granted 10% extra credit. A copy of Form DD-214 must be submitted with the application to be eligible for this credit.
