Responsibilities
The Director of Community and Economic Development will be responsible for promoting engagement, growth, and development in the Historic West End Corridor and in other communities in close proximity to the University. This position is under the primary direction of the President of Johnson C. Smith University and reports to the University's Vice President for Institutional Advancement and External Relations.
In this role, the Director is responsible for overseeing the University's partnerships and engagements with members of The Historic West End Corridor in order to advance our University-Community's overall economic, social, and cultural development. This includes initiatives related to housing, land use, infrastructure development, facilities planning, transportation, and more. The Director must also be skilled in community outreach and relationship-building to foster partnerships with local organizations and community leaders.
To excel in this role, the successful candidate must possess strong communication and leadership skills, a passion for community building, expertise in economic development, and must have a commitment to improving the quality of life in the communities surrounding the University. Also, the successful candidate must have a willingness to collaborate with various stakeholders, a deep understanding of government regulations, and the ability to manage budgets and resources effectively.
Requires undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university in Urban Planning, Public Administration, Business Administration, Economic Development, or a related field; AND five years of progressively responsible management level experience in municipal planning, building, economic development, redevelopment, or education. A Master's Degree in a related field is preferred.
Experience as an urban developer and/or community organizer, analyzing data and project management is required. The equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. Must be willing to work evenings and weekends and during other times, as needed.
