Description


Walla Walla Community College (WWCC) is seeking a creative and talented instructor focused on student success who has a strong knowledge background to fulfill the full-time, evening and weekend Basic Skills Instructor in the Corrections Education program located at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla, Washington.


This position is filled to fulfill a contract awarded to Walla Walla Community College (WWCC) by the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (WSBCTC) to operate a correctional education program at WSP in accordance with an interagency agreement with the Department of Corrections. Walla Walla Community College and its employees working in a correctional education program are expected to follow all Department of Corrections (DOC) Policies, IT and other Security requirements, follow DOC Operational Memorandums, and comply with the Superintendent's directions.

General Description:

Provide instruction for the High School+, GED, ELA (English Language Acquisition) instruction or I-BEST (Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training) Career and Academic Preparation at our Corrections Education campus at the Washington State Penitentiary, in Walla Walla, Washington. The position includes demonstrated and accurate knowledge of effective language instruction, adult education learning theory, college and career readiness standards to ensure that students advance in the command of the English language and academic and college readiness skills concurrently. This is a full-time annual contract for 212 days teaching responsibilities are 35 hours per week. This position will be working a combination of weekend and evening hours.



Teaching and Related Responsibilities


Essential Functions:




  • Teach Career and Academic Preparation(CAP), GED, ELA, HS+, and I-Best classes

  • Plan and organize instruction using College and Career Readiness Standards and/or High School+ competency measures. Interview and screen prospective students into the program

  • Plan and organize instruction using college and career readiness standards, and assessment that may include CASAS competency measures as appropriate

  • Encourage the development of communication skills and higher order thinking skills through appropriate activities and assignments focusing on listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills

  • Maintain competency assessment records and student progress accountability measures on all students enrolled in the assigned course sections

  • Advise students in their course selections and programs and make referrals as necessary; -Serve on college committees and contribute to campus activities

  • Team teach in professional technical and/or academic IBEST course sequences

  • Create authentic assessments of students' knowledge, skills, and abilities in ABE/IBEST that measure course, program, and college wide outcomes

  • Develop inclusive curriculum that reflects the diversity of student experience, including marginalized students

  • Apply multiple teaching and learning strategies that promote the affective, cognitive and kinesthetic domains of learning

  • Provide hybrid, Canvas, and/or e-Learning enhanced courses

  • Participate in and ABE/I-BEST trainings and meeting. Work as part of a teaching team to ensure student success in courses required for transition to Professional Technical programs, or academic programs and/or work

  • Serve as a mentor for new instructors

  • Serve on college, divisional and program committees as assigned

  • Participate in meetings, conferences, and trainings as required by DOC & WWCC

  • Required Qualifications:


    Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered at the discretion of the college.


  • Bachelor's degree in teaching, education or related field. Equivalent education/experience may substitute at the discretion of the College

  • Experience working with disadvantaged, at risk, and multi-cultural populations

  • Strong organizational, advising, interpersonal relationship and leadership skills



  • Preferred/Desired Qualifications:


  • Master's degree in teaching, education or related field

  • Two- years of experience teaching in Adult Basic Education

  • Experience in team-based instructional approaches, including HS+ and IBEST. Experience working with Standards based instruction, CASAS Assessment, WABERS+ data systems preferred

  • Two years' experience in corrections education

    Conditions/Terms of Employment


    This is a full-time 212-day faculty position located inside the Washington State Penitentiary, an adult male prison. Interacts daily with students (incarcerated individuals), instructors, counselors, DOC, and WWCC staff. Successful candidate must have the ability to travel between buildings with or without accommodations. Washington State Penitentiary is fully ADA compliant. The campus is tobacco free institution.


    Faculty terms and conditions of employment are negotiated with their exclusive bargaining representative, the Association for Higher Education. A complete copy of the agreement can be found on the WWCC Employment Page.


    Persons hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of lawful authorization to work in the United States within three (3) days of employment and official college transcripts. WWCC participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with your Form I-9 information to confirm that you are authorized to work in the U.S. All Walla Walla Community College staff members employed at one of the Correction Education facilities must be cleared by an FBI background check before being hired into such positions and successfully complete a 3-week corrections training program. Information from the background check may not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position. The College is a tobacco-free campus.

    Department of Correction positions are grant funded and funding is not guaranteed. Upon loss of grant funding, the position will end. WWCC does not absorb the cost to fund DOC grant positions.




    Compensation:

    The College has a negotiated faculty salary schedule. Employee placement on the schedule is determined by education level and experience. Salary is dependent on the number of days of the contract and the candidate's placement on the negotiated faculty salary schedule. Initial placement is generally $68,178 - $77,724 for a standard 212-day contract, dependent on qualifications (additional compensation for doctorate degree). The College has a comprehensive faculty benefit program including medical, dental, life, and long-term disability insurance; paid sick leave; and retirement and two optional deferred compensation programs. All full-time employees will automatically have 3% of taxable income deferred into the State of Washington Deferred Compensation Program (DCP). The college also supports faculty professional development. Walla Walla Community College requires all employees to participate in direct deposit for payment of salary.
