Job Summary
McLean Hospital is a comprehensive psychiatric hospital committed to providing easy access to superior quality, cost-effective mental health services in the Boston area, Massachusetts and beyond. Since 1811, McLean Hospital has been a world leader in the treatment of mental illness and chemical dependency, research into the cause of mental illness and the training of generations of mental health care providers. McLean's multidisciplinary programs treat a broad range of psychiatric illnesses across the full continuum of care.


Reporting to Nursing/Program director, who retains 24-hour accountability for the nursing care, provides direct oversight and management of nursing care activities and milieu management. Promotes excellent nursing care and cost-effective use of material and human resources.



Qualifications



Description - External



Clinical responsibilities:


(1) Oversees nursing care in the milieu including administration of medications and monitoring of laboratory results and services.


(2) As delegated by the nursing/program director, ensures for the smooth flow of admissions and discharges to maximize occupancy.


(3) Demonstrates comprehensive understanding and is knowledgeable about the nursing care of each patient's treatment. Participates in rounds and actively collaborates with all treatment team members.


(4) Conducts meetings with patients to maximize utilization of treatment resources (i.e. groups and individual therapy, medication management, and community based activities) in order to facilitate more flexible and successful adaptation to the demands of psychological development and of the environment (i.e. family, community and employment).


(5) Contributes to the effective interpersonal and community relations to ensure the quality of patient care


(a) Ensures patient privacy and confidentiality according to established procedures.


(b) Promotes positive, supportive, courteous communication to patients, families, visitors and hospital personnel.


(c) Provides information and feedback to staff regarding guest relations principles and practices as evidenced by staff carrying out these practices.


(d) Collaborates with other departments of the hospital and outside agencies to meet the identified needs of patients.


(6) Ensures that nursing care is consistent with the treatment philosophy and standards for patient advocacy.


(7) Monitors nursing care of the clinical program and develops plans for continuous quality improvement as needed


Administrative responsibilities:


(1) Provides nursing staff coverage based on the assessment of:


(a) Patient care


(b) Patient acuity


(c) Skill level of staff


(d) Needed staffing compliment


(2) Maintains staffing within approved budget allotments including overtime.


(3) As delegated by the nursing/program director, supervises the nursing staff.


(a) Interviews, selects and hires quality, clinically appropriate staff.


(b) Trains/orients all new staff members and re-trains all current staff members to the program including all non-position information (i.e. departmental policies and procedures) and detailed job specific information.


(c) Monitors adherence to all hospital and program required training.


(d) Provides for clinical supervision and feedback regarding clinical performance to all nursing staff.


(e) Evaluates the quality of work of nursing staff as indicated by ongoing performance counseling, performance logs, and annual performance appraisals.


(f) Provides for constructive disciplinary counseling of nursing staff according to hospital policies and documents in informal notes and formal progressive disciplinary letters.


(4) In collaboration with the nursing/program director, promotes and encourages an educational environment that develops staff to their highest potential for performance in the clinical setting,


(a) Assesses the learning needs of staff as indicated by the individual goals developed it the employee appraisal.


(b) As indicted, plans unit-based offerings based on the assessed learning needs of the staff.


(c) Encourages nursing staff participation in departmental and other hospital educational programs.


(d) Provides relevant, current and accessible educational resource material for staff.


(5) In collaboration with nursing/program director, monitors the quality of patient documentation by nursing and clinical staff to ensure compliance with standards, protocols and procedures for Joint Commission, DMH, DPH and other regulatory/licensing agencies.


(6) Demonstrates effective time management by completing assignments within established time frames.


(7) Maintains commitment of professional growth and competency through ongoing activities that promote professional role development.


(8) Takes other duties as assigned.


All employees must possess basic computer skills to use a variety of electronic or online systems for communication, clinical and administrative purposes.


Required to complete electronic medical records training, and demonstrate 80% accuracy on competency test within 30 days of hire.

Qualifications - External



Bachelors in Nursing required; 5-10 years of significant, directly related experience preferred.


Currently licensed in the Commonwealth of MA as a Registered Nurse.


Experience in staff supervision and development strongly preferred


  • Leadership ability; must be experienced in staff supervision and evaluation

  • Skilled in training, scheduling and orienting clinical staff

  • Skilled in business and computer operations

  • Must be familiar with all emergency procedures;

  • Demonstrated problem solving skills
