Job Description:

Purpose:

The HVAC Estimator is responsible for all activities within the Estimating Department including providing detailed mechanical HVAC (sheetmetal / HVAC piping) estimates and budgets for plan/specification and design/build projects. The primary focus of the HVAC Estimator will be estimating/budgeting commercial, industrial and institutional projects within Bumler Mechanical, Inc., including attaining and maintaining customers through actions, attitudes and services to the extent that we are recognized as exceptional.

Essential Job Functions:
  • General understanding of hydronic piping, sheetmetal, HVAC systems and associated components.
  • Review proposal specifications, project drawings, attend pre-bid and post-bid meetings, etc. to determine scope of work and required contents of estimate.
  • Provide complete conceptual and final estimating input on complex projects.
  • Perform detailed computerized takeoffs on both sheetmetal and HVAC piping using Quotesoft estimating software.
  • Perform conceptual estimating on design/build projects with minimal information and can visualize the HVAC system from design criteria and design narratives.
  • Prepare detailed estimates using computerized takeoffs and Microsoft Excel template.
  • Develop and submit Request For Information (RFI's) throughout the bid phase. Manage RFI's within the bid process to ensure project scope is clearly defined.
  • Attend pre-bid walkthrough meetings. Meet with clients, vendors, and other individuals to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve issues.
  • Evaluate bids from subcontractors and vendors.
  • Work with subcontractors and vendors to identify scope gaps.
  • Work with bid team to identify value engineering opportunities during the bid phase.
  • Support the construction team during post bid analysis and meetings. Work with subcontractors and vendors to finalize scope and cost.
  • Work with the construction team to maintain a cost database. Conduct periodic reviews of database with the construction team.
  • Work with management, sales staff, and engineers to evaluate estimates, budgets, and conceptual designs.
  • Be able to multi-task several estimating projects at once, adhering to aggressive deadlines that may exist relevant to the estimating workload.
  • Work with project managers, vendors, and other contractors to provide engineering and cost data regarding project feasibility.
  • Work with the Project Management team to develop estimates for Addendums, Bulletins, and RFI's as may be required with ongoing construction projects.
  • Work with the CFO, Project Management and Accounting Department to evaluate and closely track cost variance between current work in progress job costs and original estimates.
  • Ensure all material pricing, labor factors, and multipliers are up-to-date and accurate.
  • Assist in business development efforts, as required.
  • Assist in preparing and reviewing forecasts and backlog reports.
  • Assist with pre-construction activities, including field engineering, pipe and ductwork design layout and submittal review.

Skills Required:
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient with MS Office including Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint, and Project.
  • Proficient with online bidding platforms including ProCore and Building Connected.
  • Ability to qualify prospects and sales leads.
  • Experience in design and estimating of mechanical HVAC systems.
  • Leadership and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to lead and adapt in a demanding, ever-changing environment.
  • Takes a collaborative approach to getting the work done.
  • Physical ability to conduct regular site walks.
  • Must hold a valid driver's license.
  • Essential Physical Abilities:
  • Willing to travel to local project sites as required.
  • Willing to work remote and telecommute as required.
  • Ability to meet highest attendance requirements.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally.
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments on a timely basis with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to use personal computer, calculator, etc.
  • Could involve some lifting.
