Position Summary

The BioScience Research Collaborative (BRC) is thoughtfully designed to facilitate and encourage interactions among researchers. It is equipped for cutting-edge laboratory, theoretical, and computational investigations and features ten floors of research labs, centers, Rice classrooms, and auditoriums.

The Custodian II (evening shift), in addition to performing the functions of a Custodian I-including cleaning, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and removing trash from restrooms and buildings, as well as cleaning and polishing furniture, chalkboards, and walls-will also perform the following duties: stripping, scrubbing, buffing, sealing, waxing, and applying finishes to floors; shampooing and extracting carpets; and removing heavy trash. The incumbent will document services daily and customize plans with customers quarterly to obtain feedback and schedule work. This position has no supervisory duties.

The ideal candidate for the BioScience Research Collaborative (BRC) Custodian II position (evening shift) has experience working in a team environment and is comfortable managing multiple tasks in a fast-paced setting.

Workplace Requirements

This position is exclusively on-site, requiring all duties to be performed in person at the BioScience Research Collaborative (BRC) building from 2:30 pm to 11:00 pm, Monday through Friday . Per Rice Policy 440 , work arrangements may be subject to change.

This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent is expected to report to the BRC, provide designated essential services, and work under the overall direction of the Crisis Management Team for the duration of a campus emergency.

Hiring Range

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position with a hiring rate starting at $15.75 an hour, with the potential for a higher rate based on qualifications and experience. *Non-exempt (hourly) positions under FLSA are eligible for overtime.

Minimum Requirements

  • 2+years of experience in cleaning and maintenance, along with proficiency in floor care (stripping, scrubbing, buffing, sealing, waxing) and carpet cleaning

Skills:

  • Must be able to speak, read, and write basic English
  • Must be proficient in the use of large commercial buffers
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work as a team with others


Essential Functions

  • Strips, scrubs, buffs, floors
  • Seals, waxes, and applies finishes
  • Shampoos and extract carpets
  • Pressure washes surfaces
  • Removes heavy trash
  • Performs special assignments in relation to custodial services
  • Washes exterior windows, cloisters, and entrances
  • Cleans showers, restroom floors, lavatories, fixtures, kitchenettes, public spaces, offices, laboratories, etc.
  • Replenishes paper supplies
  • Vacuums, sweeps, dusts and mops floors
  • Cleans and polishes furniture, glass, doors, mirrors, walls, and other surfaces
  • Identifies and reports needed repairs
  • Helps with moving furniture for events
  • Assists other custodians with work as needed
  • Performs all other duties assigned


Working Conditions

This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent in this position is expected to report to the BRC, provide the essential services designated, and work under the overall direction of the Crisis Management Team for the duration of a campus emergency.

Physical:


  • HEAVY - Exert up to 70 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.
  • Requires walking or standing up to 8 hours per day.
  • Other physical requirements of the job include manual dexterity and the ability to see, hear, reach, climb, and balance.


Work environment:

  • Primarily an indoor work environment in a variety of university settings, which may include offices, food servers, and residential facilities.
  • May be exposed to temperature extremes in facilities that are not climate-controlled
  • Work hazards include exposure to toxic and caustic chemicals. Some work may occur at heightened elevations on ladders or scaffolding, or in wet areas .
