Job Description:
The successful candidate will supervise and direct assigned personnel in their activities to prepare finished subgrade for asphalt, as well as lay and roll asphalt to meet specifications in an efficient, safe, and satisfactory way.
Job Duties:
Perform all duties within the guidelines set forth in the policies and procedures manual.
Create an atmosphere whereby subordinates are encouraged to improve their skill and maintain a high level of moral for themselves and other employees.
See that crews start working on time and ensure that they work the number of hours for which they are paid.
Assist and direct crew in the following areas; using equipment in a safe and proper manner, improving job performance, controlling cost and quality of work, increasing productivity, improving communications, and housekeeping of project.
Participate in the periodical evaluation of all assigned personnel, discussing their contributions to the company, their development and possible pay adjustments.
Supervise and direct the activities of assigned personnel in the performance of their duties directing and instructing them in their proper operation, technique, use and maintenance of equipment.
See that all new personnel receive proper orientation to acquaint them with the company, policies, safety and their job responsibilities.
Develop a cooperative working relationship with all management seeking their comments and suggestions.
Cooperate with the human resources department and risk management department being knowledgeable as to all aspects of EEO and safety responsibilities. Comply with these requirements and insist upon compliance among all subordinates.
Conduct a continuous evaluation of the following items; cost and yields, material yields, plants and schedules, salaries, promotions, job assignments, equipment needs, personnel needs, on the job training program. Quality control, relate any problems, changes or recommendations to operation manager.
Monitor closely all cost and yields within areas of responsibility and be constantly alert to changes in the relationship of the two which might be an adverse indication.
Schedule the purchase of all material within area of responsibility and coordinate delivery to achieve the optimal use of material labor and equipment.
Ensure all work undertaken complies with all local laws, ordinances and EPA regulations concerning the lay down of asphaltic materials and related activities.
Maintain close contact and a good working relationship with the general public engineers' inspections, and customers to facilitate job progress and promote a positive company image, develop a courteous and considerate attitude of assigned personnel towards these groups.
Assist assigned supervisors with equipment inspections, request maintenance and repair crew as needed.
Review all required daily reports, verify their correctness, and transmit promptly to the operations manager.
Maintain a daily log recording important conversations and events which could be used for future referencing and ensure all supervisors maintain their daily logs/diary.
Maintain professional conduct at all times.
Complete all assigned Learning Management System Initiatives.
Experience & Knowledge:
Over 3 years and up to 5 years to become familiar with techniques for laying various asphaltic material in difficult design layouts and understanding various specifications that need to be met as well as related supervisory responsibilities.
Broad knowledge of a specialized field, use of drawings and a variety of precision measuring instruments; knowledge of manufacturing and techniques used to lay various asphaltic material.

Position requires integrity and discretion to safeguard confidential data such as cost information, wage information, personnel information/ actions and other confidential information shared with supervisory personnel where disclosure could have an adverse internal effect and/ or a minor external effect.

Regular contact with subordinates, other departments, furnishing or obtaining information or reports, discussing subjects related to projects or others supervisory matters which require tact to avoid friction and obtain cooperation, position also requires contacts outside the company where improper handling could affect company objectives or others perception of company.
Complexity of Duties:
A wide variety of duties involving general knowledge of related organizational policies and procedures and their application to case not previously covered, duties require considerable judgment to work independently toward general results, to devise new or modify and adapt existing methods, techniques and procedures to meet new or unusual requirements and to make related decisions guided by precedent and within limits of established policies.
Supervision Received:
Works under general direction, works from policies and general objectives with little functional guidance. Rarely refers specific cases to superior unless clarification or interpretation is required.
Character & Scope of Supervision:
Position is responsible for the direct supervision over a unit with more than 25 but seldom over 50, not including trucks, where 50% or more of time is spent assigning, reviewing / checking work, and eliminating difficulties under standardized procedures.
Errors:
Probable errors would be serious causing waste of material, damage to equipment and poor quality of asphalt mix which might be sent to a client, work involves considerable accuracy and responsibility.
Physical Activity & Demand:
Position requires the ability to climb onto machines, to stoop, kneel, crouch, lift and grasp position requires ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and the ability to perceive sounds and receive detailed information through oral communications.
Moderate physical effort required. Frequently lilting or moving average weight material (over 25 pounds) or occasional lifting or moving heavy weight materials (over60 pounds) less than 20% of time is spent in physically demanding role.
Mental & Visual Demand:
Continuous mental and visual attention required to oversee job, personnel and equipment assigned. Position requires constant alertness to job activities.

Hazards:
