Principal Plant Engineer

Description:

Our client is a company focused on reducing CO2 emissions by replacing cement with its scalable, low-carbon alternative. As part of a passionate and accomplished team, you will bring your extensive experience in the cement industry, particularly in engineering, process design, and plant construction. Your role will encompass overseeing the design, construction, and commissioning of the company's plants, focusing on optimizing processes, ensuring compliance with regulations, and introducing new technologies. You will directly impact the future of the environment as the company scales, reducing millions of tons of CO2 emissions. Your dedicated commitment and attention towards a safe and reliable technology to sustainably and competitively produce eco-friendly cement is essential.

Reports to: Chief Operations Officer

Location: Golden, Colorado

Initial Responsibilities:
  1. Lead the engineering efforts related to the company's supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) and carbon reduced cements production, focusing on process design, optimization, and pilot plant construction.
  2. Oversee the development and implementation of pollution treatment measures and combustion processes within cement plants.
  3. Collaborate closely with the R&D team to incorporate new technologies into the company's operations, challenging and advising on their feasibility and effectiveness.
  4. Serve as the primary liaison with engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firms during the construction and commissioning phases of cement plant projects.
  5. Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and permits, supporting the permitting process as needed.
  6. Utilize your expertise in process controls to safeguard interlocks and optimize plant performance.
  7. Provide technical insights and challenge the work of external partners, such as Penta, ensuring the highest standards are met.
  8. Cultivate relationships with relevant vendors to ensure access to cutting-edge equipment and technologies, facilitating their integration into company operations.
  9. Actively participate in plant/process optimization initiatives, leveraging your experience to enhance efficiency and sustainability.
  10. Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to address challenges and drive continuous improvement in SCMs and carbon-reduced cement production processes.
  11. Oversee and support energy transition from natural gas to other.


Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (BA/BS) is required, with a focus on mechanical or civil engineering preferred.
  • 15-25+ years of relevant experience in the cement industry, with a track record of designing, constructing, and commissioning cement plants.
  • Experience with fly ash or SEM slag production is highly desirable.
  • Strong process design experience, including proficiency in 3D modeling, PFDs, and P&IDs.
  • Experience with pollution treatment, heat mass balance design and review, innovative combustion design, heat exchange technical experience, and material processing are essential.
  • Ideally licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE) in Mechanical or Civil engineering.
  • Hands-on process design/analysis skills, with the ability to review and challenge technical work.
  • Familiarity with plant/process optimization, R&D collaboration, and relevant permitting regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with vendors and external partners.
  • Experience with new technology introduction and mineral processing is advantageous.
  • Strong prioritization skills and a track record of execution in complex engineering projects.
  • Ability to provide candid feedback and challenge assumptions without sugar coating.
  • Strong presence in professional settings, with the confidence to speak up and advocate for solutions.

Location/Compensation:
  • Based in Golden, Colorado, with the possibility of international sourcing for candidates willing to relocate.
  • Compensation commensurate with experience and qualifications.
