Position Title: TechX Intern -Information Technology Technician (Temporary, Part-Time, Up to 19.5 hours a week for 16 weeks, based on availability and need per semester)



Department: East Campus - Business and IT Division HSI STEM IT Knowledge & Context Grant



Rate of Pay: $19.03/hour

Position Summary:



Are you a current IT/Cybersecurity student seeking hands-on experience in networking, system administration, Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, and/or cybersecurity while also contributing to Pima Community College's culture of inclusion and excellence? The Pima Community College East Campus Center of Excellence in IT/Cybersecurity HSI STEM IT Knowledge & Context team is now recruiting TechEx interns. TechEx interns have the unique opportunity to work in an operational capacity at our Pima Community College East Campus Center of Excellence to support the Center of Excellence through hands-on projects. As a TechEx intern, you will play a key role in architecting an IoT Makerspace and providing operational support within our state-of-the-art data center. Your tasks will involve networking, programming, hardware development, security principals, documentation, and opportunities to be involved with ongoing projects in the data center and in the Cyber Warfare Range that support the overall operational and programmatic delivery of academic instruction and hands-on activities included in Pima Community College IT/Cybersecurity courses.



About the HSI STEM Title III IT Knowledge and Context Grant: This position is funded by a US Department of Education Title III HSI STEM grant. The purpose of the HSI-STEM - IT Knowledge and Context Grant is to increase the number of Hispanic and low-income students attaining degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM); and to develop model transfer and articulation agreements between two-year HSIs and four-year institutions in such fields. The focus of this program is to attract more students and support them to persist and compete in the high-demand field of IT/Cybersecurity. It also improves the capacity of our IT meta-major to meet the high demand of employers in our region for IT and cybersecurity professionals. The grant provides for innovations in technology, teaching strategies, and student outreach. TechEx Interns will work closely with the Applied Learning Coordinator, Grant Manager, Academic Director, and campus administration to meet the goals and objectives of the grant, and to meet the needs of students in the target areas and populations.



Anticipated start date for the position will be: August 26, 2024




This position is contingent upon continued funding through designated external sources. This grant is set to expire on 09/30/2026.




The work schedule for this position is flexible and may include working evenings and weekends.




Duties and Responsibilities:




The primary project for this internship will be to help develop an Internet of Things (IoT) Makerspace. Additionally, this internship will include working with current data center staff on projects within the PCC East Campus Center of Excellence Data Center.



  • Collaborate with the project team to research, assemble and integrate a diverse range of IoT devices, which can include smart light bulbs, switches, sensors, cameras, and actuators, etc..

  • Write and edit code and perform programming tasks to enable communication protocols (MQTT, HTTP, CoAP, DDS, etc..)

  • Develop a user interface or control system, potentially using python or JavaScript to facilitate user interaction with integrated devices.

  • Contribute to the creation of educational materials, such as manuals, guides, or infographics.

  • Complete project documentation such as processes, procedures, and lessons learned.

  • Perform testing to ensure the reliability, interoperability, and security of the integrated IoT ecosystem.

  • Install, set-up, program, test, and maintain Center of Excellence (IT/Cyber) data center network equipment.

  • Provide technical assistance to end users (Help Desk)

Job Requirements:



  • Current Pima Community College student or recently graduated from Pima Community College within the past 6 months and

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree or current PCC IBEST student enrolled in CIS program and

  • Completion of 30 credits in a Pima Community College CIS (IT/Cybersecurity) degree program and

  • Currently enrolled in or have completed:


    • CIS 119 (Network Essentials) or

    • CIS 129 (Programming & Problem Solving I) or

    • CIS 188 (Scripting for Automation)


Or


  • Current Pima Community College student or recently graduated from Pima Community College within the past 6 months and

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree or current PCC IBEST student enrolled in CIS program and

  • Evidence of certification in one or more areas of IT such as:


    • Cyber security

    • Enterprise data storage

    • Project management

    • Cloud computing

    • Analytics and data management

    • Application development

    • Architecture methodologies

    • IT service management

    • Networking and wireless


Or


  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of Python programming principles (ie. loops, functions, controls statements, etc)

  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of Networking principles (communication protocols
