Program Specialist - Lead Educator at School in the Park

School in the Park is an innovative program that shifts the location of “school” from a traditional classroom setting in an inner-city school, to the resources and educational opportunities available at museums in Balboa Park. A relevant instructional environment is created as hands-on learning challenges students to become active participants in their own education. The School in the Park program gives space for students to participate in a program that is designed to fully utilize the unique opportunities of San Diego’s cultural institutions in Balboa Park. Rosa Parks Elementary School and Central Elementary School bring third, fourth, and fifth grade students to spend up to seven weeks in Balboa Park, where they participate in weeklong education programs at ten institutions. Wilson Middle School and Clark Middle School sixth graders spend two weeks in Balboa Park each, where they participate in weeklong education programs and get to visit 4 different institutions during their two weeks. School in the Park allows students to experience learning in new and highly engaging ways, as academic subjects come to life and hands-on projects create new avenues for success.

The Lead Educator for School in the Park works both independently and in partnership with the SITP Staff, museum educators, and classroom teachers to meet the program objectives. The person must be: a creative problem-solver, able to manage multiple demands and tasks, able to articulate expectations while supporting diverse approaches to student learning, and have highly developed interpersonal skills. The primary responsibility of the Lead Educator is to positively impact student learning outcomes by bridging classroom and museum experiences, while facilitating a continuous improvement cycle with all stakeholders. The Lead Educator oversees and provides coaching in curriculum development for all of the institutions participating in the SITP program. The Lead Educator works closely with the Education Technologist to ensure consistency, collaboration, and bridging between museum and classroom curriculum. Secondarily, the Lead Educator supports all daily operations of SITP. The Lead Educator reports directly to the SITP Director.
