Position Summary

The Abuelo Lab (www.abuelolab.com) in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University seeks a Research Technologist. The lab focuses on immunobiology in periparturient dairy cattle and neonatal calves with the goal identifying and testing mechanisms that enhance immunity in these animals to increase their resistance to infectious diseases. The methods employed to achieve these goals combine mechanistic studies using cells or tissues with epidemiological studies in the commercial farms. The research is funded by federal and state agencies as well as industry.


Duties for this position will include:

(60%) Support to laboratory-based research activities, including assisting in the design, execution, and troubleshooting of experiments and protocols; keeping of detailed and accurate laboratory records, including protocols and databases; assisting with data entry and preliminary analysis of results.


(25%) Support to on-farm research, including sample processing, storage, and analysis; and communication with dairy producers and research collaborators.

(15%) Laboratory management duties, including ordering of supplies and materials; maintaining the laboratory facility and equipment; supervision of safety protocols; supervision of trainees; and attending lab meetings.


The successful candidate will be working with a faculty researcher and undergraduate, veterinary, and graduate students, as well as with other research collaborators within MSU, nationally, and internationally. It is also expected that the person in this position will contribute to the supervision of graduate and undergraduate trainees. This is a one-year term position with possible extension contingent upon availability of funds.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree such as a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science or other science-related area (e.g. biology, chemistry, biochemistry, etc.); six months to a year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic research techniques such as tissue culture, molecular biology, flow cytometry, and/or agriculture; word processing, spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor of Science in Animal Science or other science related area is required. A driver's license is also required.

Desired Qualifications

Experience and understanding of basic concepts of biochemical, molecular, and cellular biology; experience with cell culture; experience handling live animals, preferably dairy cattle; experience performing basic wet-chemistry techniques in the lab; experiencing organizing and analyzing data; knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Attention to detail is critical, as is a sense of humor, the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, adhere to deadlines, maintain high ethical research standards, accept constructive criticism, and succeed in a team-oriented environment. Must be eager and willing to learn, ask questions, and make suggestions for how to improve the lab.

Work Hours

This is a 40 hour per week position, mostly during standard hours (8AM-5PM). However, non-standard working shifts might be required in rare occasions to support ongoing projects.

Description of End Date

This is a limited term position funded for 12 months from date of hire with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.
