The Department of Urban and Regional Planning (DURP), College of Social Sciences, University of Hawaii at Manoa (Honolulu, Hawaii) invites applicants for the position of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor in the area of Planning for Climate Change and Sustainability. This is a permanent, tenure track, full-time, 9-month, faculty appointment to begin August 1, 2025, subject to position clearance and availability of funds.

DURP offers the following academic programs: accredited Master of Urban and Regional Planning (MURP), PhD, three combined bachelors and masters degree (BAM) pathways with Global Environmental Science, Hawaiian Studies, and Interdisciplinary Studies: Sustainability, respectively, and three graduate certificates. DURP houses the National Disaster Preparedness Training Center (ndptc.hawaii.edu), a Congressionally-authorized, FEMA-funded national center that conducts research and develops training for first responders, emergency managers and professionals working on climate adaptation and community resilience. The Institute for Sustainability and Resilience (ISR), an independent unit that jointly administers the Sustainability BAM, collaborates closely with DURP. DURP has a diverse student body, and a faculty recognized for their excellence in research, teaching, and mentorship. Duties and Responsibilities - Assistant Professor (F-3)

  1. Develop and maintain a research agenda in the area of planning for climate change and sustainability, including on topics such as, energy policy, sustainable transportation, infrastructure planning, coastal planning and management, resilience, and land use, among others.
  2. Publish scholarly, peer-reviewed research in ones areas of expertise.
  3. Seek extramural funding to support this research agenda.
  4. Teach undergraduate and graduate courses on planning for climate change and sustainability, and some related planning areas such as, energy policy, sustainable transportation, infrastructure planning, coastal planning and management, resilience, and land use, among others.
  5. Supervise and mentor MURP and PhD students.
  6. Provide service to the department, college, and the university.
  7. Other duties as assigned by the department chair.

Duties and Responsibilities - Associate Professor (F-4)

In addition to the duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Professor rank,

  1. Serve as department chair when elected.
  2. Provide significant service to the college and community outside of the area of primary responsibilities.
  3. Sustain involvement in professional and self-development activities.

Duties and Responsibilities - Professor (F-5)

In addition to the duties and responsibilities of the Associate Professor rank,

  1. Serve as mentor to junior faculty.
  2. Engage with planning and related professional communities in leadership capacities.

Minimum Qualifications - Assistant Professor (F-3)

  1. Ph.D. in urban planning or a closely related field from an accredited US college, university or foreign equivalent; ABDs will be considered but all degree requirements must be completed prior to the date of hire.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge and documented research record in the area of planning for climate change and sustainability, including on topics such as, energy policy, sustainable transportation, infrastructure planning, coastal planning and management, resilience, and land use, among others.
  3. Ability to teach courses in DURPs urban and regional planning curriculum, and one or more of the following areas: climate change and sustainability, energy policy, sustainable transportation, infrastructure planning, coastal planning and management, resilience, and land use.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with students, faculty, staff and/or administration.
  5. Demonstrated ability to maintain professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.

Minimum Qualifications - Associate Professor (F-4)

  1. Minimum qualifications of the Assistant Professor rank;
  2. Currently at the Associate Professor rank;
  3. An established publication record and research agenda in the area of planning for climate change and sustainability, including on topics such as, energy policy, sustainable transportation, infrastructure planning, coastal planning and management, resilience, and land use, among others.
  4. Evidence of increasing professional maturity.

Minimum Qualifications - Professor (F-5)

  1. Minimum qualifications of the Associate Professor rank;
  2. Currently at the Professor rank;
  3. Scholarly achievement at the forefront of the discipline as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications.
  4. Demonstrated excellence in teaching, with evidence of professional maturity.

Desirable Qualifications - Assistant Professor (F-3)

  1. Demonstrated ability to secure research grant proposals.
  2. Demonstrated interest in and substantial record of supporting students.
  3. Evidence of research in planning or planning-related fields in the Asia Pacific region.
  4. Demonstrated ability to teach research methods (qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods, or spatial analysis methods such as GIS) and/or other urban and regional planning courses.

Desirable Qualifications - Associate Professor (F-4)

In addition to the desirable qualifications of the Assistant Professor (F-3) rank,

  1. Well-defined and impactful research agenda and demonstrated record of top-tier peer-reviewed publications.
  2. Demonstrated track record in securing research grants.
  3. Demonstrated track record of teaching and curriculum development in planning for climate change and sustainability.
  4. Demonstrated experience in academic or professional service related to planning.

Desirable Qualifications - Professor (F-5)

In addition to the desirable qualifications of the Associate Professor (F-4) rank,

  1. Demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring, professional service and engagement, and leadership.
  2. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues, community organizations, and other entities in collaborative, cross-cultural, and interdisciplinary endeavors.
