GLOBAL EHS DIRECTOR - DECARBONIZATION

This position will require working throughout global time zones and have the flexibility to travel globally.
The Global EHS Director - Decarbonization is part of the Medtronic Global EHS Team reporting to the Vice President EHS with a dotted line to the Chief Sustainability Officer. This role provides leadership and direction for Medtronic's decarbonization efforts within Global Operations & Supply Chain to achieve enterprise-wide business and sustainability objectives.

As a Global Program Lead you will play a pivotal role in being responsible for and coordinating carbon reduction initiatives across multiple sites. Your responsibilities will include leading programs, projects, managing cross-functional teams, suppliers and contractors to ensure successful execution of net zero strategy. Lastly, this position partner closely with the sustainability organization to drive the overall sustainability strategy will also ensure detailed financial requirements are met by collaborating with their assigned finance partner. This will require an ability to report out to senior management steering committee as well as a strength in collaboration with other functions like procurement and public relations.

This is a key leadership role responsible for the development, implementation, and oversight of the enterprise-wide environmental sustainability programs. This position will lead the company's strategic initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact and ensuring compliance with sustainability regulations and best practices.

A Day in the Life

As the Global EHS Director - Decarbonization you will:



  • Lead Enterprise Carbon Reduction Strategy: Develop, implement, and oversee the enterprise-wide carbon reduction strategy, collaborating closely with internal stakeholders to align sustainability efforts with business objectives.


  • Provide Program Management: Provide strategic direction and manage the Decarbonization Project, ensuring strong stakeholder relationships that integrate sustainability with business strategies and drive compliance.


  • Foster Strategic Relationships: Build and maintain long-term alliances with key internal and external stakeholders including but not limited to the Enterprise Sustainability Group and Global Facilities Engineering. Regularly brief senior and executive leadership on ongoing operations and strategic initiatives and navigate cross-functional challenges to secure cooperation on operational issues.


  • Execute Sustainability Initiatives: Lead the development and execution of initiatives focused on reducing the company's carbon footprint, waste, water usage, and energy consumption including the setting of clear goals, achievements, and results for each project.


  • Provide Strategic Guidance: Support various functions and businesses in successfully implementing sustainability initiatives across the enterprise, ensuring alignment with overall strategic objectives.


  • Ensure Regulatory Compliance: Oversee compliance with all relevant sustainability regulations, standards, and reporting requirements.


  • Provide Team Leadership: Mentor and guide a team of sustainability professionals, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.


  • Provide Representation: Represent Medtronic in industry working groups and at conferences and forums related to sustainability and decarbonization.


  • Manage Resources and Budgetary Oversight: Lead project budgets, ensuring efficient resource allocation and monitor expenditures and financial performance. Develop and manage the decarbonization budget, ensuring resources are effectively allocated to achieve strategic goals. Where possible implement cost-savings measures where possible.


  • Reporting and Documentation: Prepare regular progress reports for senior leaders (at both the SLC and Strategic leadership meetings) and stakeholders while maintaining accurate records, including project documentation and performance metrics.

This role requires a combination of strategic vision, leadership, and the ability to influence across functions to drive the company's sustainability and decarbonization efforts forward.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required.

  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant EHS & Sustainability experience working with regulatory bodies & NGOs with 7+ years of managerial experience, or Advanced Degree with a minimum of 8 years of relevant EHS & Sustainability experience working with regulatory bodies & NGOs with 7+ years of managerial experience.

  • Proven track record on decarbonization program implementation and success.

  • Demonstrated expertise and knowledge of environmental and climate related concepts and issues, including energy and climate strategies and best practices, science-based targets, GHG accounting, CDP, GRI standards, and other emerging trends and concepts.

  • Proven performance in managing and implementing carbon reduction programs across a global organization resulting in net reduction of emissions.

  • Experience leading teams with global accountabilities required to engage and align cross-functionally and a demonstrated track record of leadership, staff development and objective achievement.

  • Strong Communication Skills (Verbal, Written, and Presentation Skills).

Nice to Have

Priority will be given to applicants who have education, experience, and/or certifications in the following areas:


  • Advanced Degree.

  • Proven track record of strong project management performance with experience driving multi-phase projects to completion including diverse project teams and multiple stakeholders.

  • Leadership through influence in matrixed organization and ability to work well in a team environment including cross cultures.

  • Ability to strongly advocate for and represent EHS and Sustainability to a cross functional team and to executive leadership.

  • Excellent communication and training skills.

  • Ability to discern and appropriately communicate sensitive issues.

  • Willingness to work flexible hours and travel to diverse work locations.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$164,000.00 - $246,000.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).This position is eligible for an annual long-term incentive plan.

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others)
