Who are we looking for?


Our Rail & Transit Business Group in the U.S. West is looking for a dynamic and motivated individual to take on the role of Design Manager - Rail & Transit based out of any of our offices in the San Francisco Bay area (Santa Rosa, San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose or Concord). You will support our Rail & Transit Business Group's leadership team and oversee rail and transit pursuits and projects across the State of California. The position will include support of business development, client relationship management, and leading a diversified portfolio of projects. The position may include limited staff management.

Project Delivery Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for leading multi-disciplinary project delivery for complex rail & transit design-build and progressive design-build projects to produce compliant & constructible designs in accordance with client, operations and maintenance, and construction requirements
  • Ensure that designs follow the appropriate engineering processes, including GHD and project specific processes
  • Coordinating quality control of all deliverable submittals in accordance with GHD's Quality Management System
  • Accountable for developing or verifying the technical scope of a project and working with discipline leads to provide pricing during the proposal phase, and work planning following project award to initiate design activities
  • Actively participate in the preparation of project delivery schedules in collaboration with the project controls team
  • Responsible for managing the engineering design budget and providing key inputs to the project controls team
  • Responsible for implementing and following the project's change control system, including proactive escalation of potential changes
  • Continuously review and improve the overall project strategy to meet design schedule and budget with the ability to support staging and phasing requirements
  • Ensure fluid communication between the project management team, design team, construction team, and various internal and external partners
  • Verify that the schedule and budget data match the progress of professional services throughout execution of the project
  • Coordinates the preparation of design criteria by the discipline leads
  • Lead the creation and execution of design work plan and level of effort
  • Convenes, chairs and documents interdisciplinary design coordination meetings and brings forward updates and any critical issues that impact external partners to the Project Manager
  • May serve as a liaison between the construction contract administrator and engineering team during construction. Coordinates multidisciplinary problem resolution resulting from non-compliance with drawings and specifications at the site
  • Coordinating design compliance through verification and validation of performance specifications
  • Identifying value added design changes to positively support design-build and progressive design-build projects across all subject areas

Business Development Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a forward-looking perspective on market trends and industry developments as they change, through participation in industry groups (e.g. CMAA, APTA, WTS, Beavers etc.), reviewing advancements and monitoring other projects and processes and client activity
  • Serve as the capture manager for key client pursuits
  • Build GHD client relationships through industry knowledge and experience
  • Work collaboratively and seamlessly with other GHD business groups within the U.S. West (e.g. transportation, environmental and future energy), consulting engineering firms and contractors to win and complete work and service commitments.
  • Seek out internal resources wherever they may be to provide efficient project delivery and excellent client satisfaction. This will include active participation in GHD's Rail & Transit service line which includes GHD team members in Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, Middle East and the U.S.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's (B.S.) degree from an accredited college or university in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Professional Engineer - Civil license in the State of California or the ability to obtain a license within six months of employment
  • 10+ years of design management experience on large multi-discipline engineering teams ($500M+) with experience in complex station and facilities design
  • Design Management experience on commuter rail and/or light rail projects within the U.S. and California
  • Alternative project delivery (design-build, progressive design-build, and/or CM/GC) experience leading design team arrangements with contractors and consultants
  • Understanding of rail transit stations (at grade, elevated and underground), bridges, signals, and communication facilities
  • Knowledge of scheduling software and engineering and capital cost estimating techniques is a definite asset.
  • Experience with Building Information Modelling (BIM) on multi-discipline projects
  • The ability to deal with uncertainty and changing & multiple priorities
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with overseeing the development of technical specifications
  • Strong organizational skills

Salary Range- $163,000-$245,000
